Buick for a Merc!!!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Special Sam, Feb 4, 2012.

  1. Traded my 52 Buick Special 4 dr for a 53 Mercury Monterey 2 dr hardtop. My first car was a 53 Mercury Monterey 2 dr hardtop my father bought new. Around 1991 the city made me pull it off because I couldn't afford to tag and insure it, have since found out I didn't have to get rid of it. Needless to say I'm thrilled. I've already drove the Merc around the block. Had the Buick since Sept. '09 and never drove it. All the interior the Buick had was seats, the Merc has a complete interior and it's in very usuable condition. Since my health is failing I'm thinking my first car being a 53 Merc, my last car should be also. Not to mention I'd rather have the Merc. Here's pics of the Buick and the Mercury.

  2. Here's a sheet with a couple of pics of my original Mercury. They're not very good but they're all I have of it.

I'm happy to see you with it as well - 53 Mercs are so cool.

  5. The Buick was pretty rusty underneath and the mercury only has a little rust in the spare tire well.

    Good trade in my opinion...

Edit: The Buick could of been sweet with a chop and section and converting it to a 2dr sled, but as they both stand, I see more potential in the Merc, but I'm 2dr biased almost always...

What was wrong with the guy who traded off a Merc for a Buick? Looks like you got the best of someone to me. Was it an even swap? Ya done good son.

  11. My son found this car and asked if I was interested in it. I told him I'd love to have it but didn't have any money. He asked if I'd trade the Buick for it. I said yes but nobody's crazy enough to do that. He said this guy was a GM guy and didn't care for the Merc. Guy is a trader and so is my son. He told me to let him deal with it and I did. Guy was asking 4500 for the Merc and I had my Buick on the HAMB for 2000. Son said he'd trade even if we finished painting the Buick or like they are for 500. Son offered 300 and the deal was done. I'm thrilled ****less!!!

I miss my '53 Ford Victoria, but your Merc is the real stuff! Interior is plush, the gray mohair is DE-LUXE! Great trade deal...your son is also a 'keeper'!

    Congrats.

  16. Thanks everybody, I just hope I feel good enough tomorrow to look it over some more. Was sick today and it was everything I could do to even take a few pics of it. It needs a few lights worked on and I think the fuel pump may be bad, leaking a little gas, but I can't wait to drive it a little more. We went around the block and it seemed like it was geared way too high. My son looked underneath and its got overdrive but no way to shift it. He flipped the lever by hand and drove it again and that changed it so we'll have to hook that up now. We found a handle in the trunk that said OVERDRIVE on it and the place under the dash where it goes but its broke. I figure any kind of cable can be hooked up to pull and push the lever so thats what we'll probably do. Can't waity to mess with the car some. It's like Christmas all over. I'll have to start working on a new avatar now.

the other guy doesn't sound like much of a trader. He got screwed! and you got a hell of a deal. I guess no trade happens unless both parties are happy, even if one guy has his back up against a wall he still has the option of saying no.

I bet you slept with a grin from ear to ear.

I think that was a great trade. I would really like to have one of those Mercs one day. I really like them.
