A buddy at work sent me this link. I have NO idea how it fits on a Pontiac BB, but don't really care, either. http://www.arkansaspontiacs.org/apaforums/viewtopic.php?t=536 The page is by a guy who built some diggers in his garage back in the day. There are some nice pics of vintage race cars, but what I really loved was that he posted a bunch of shots of the construction of his car! Wrote things like "the bellhousing is 1/4-inch min. thickness well pipe cap, cut and welded to a flange matched to the back of the block." "Rear end junkyard variety, torch cut and welded...some axles were torch cut and re-welded, some were cut, resplined and heat treated..." I haven't had time yet to read all of it, but what I read is really cool. -Brad
You should send your buddy a six-pack of his favorite brew. This link is awesome. Private pics like these of old style dragster building and racing are precious. I love his drawing of a tubing bender. It looks like something many guys here could build and use. I saved that separate from the link so I could peruse it later. Home made tool ideas and sketches are hard to come by. Thanks for the great link.
WOW!! That's good stuff from a real old timer. That mandrel bender is just what I needed to make. Thanks for sharing it. Next time I run across Ray Godman, I'll run this by him. BTW, the Boll Weevil FC was at Bowling Green this past June for the Cacklefest. The AM/R was there the year before.
Great find! Nice post, I'll need to read the rest latter. In 1964 I watched a match race between Sachs and Sons blown comet and Stone-Woods and Cooks gasser. The race was at Lions dragstrip. That pict. brought back some memories. That nite's race had 16 fuel dragsters and not a one was a "big name". Most of them showed up on a open single axle trailer. Pulled by a long roof. No crew cab trucks back then. Does this mean I'm getting older? I was In the Marine corp at the time going to school in San Diego.
i try to click on the vintage FED dragster site and get "page not found" is there a new link? Thanks, Paully.
I also see that that thread is very old, but does anyone have that bender information saved and available?
