cool vintage shifter knobs lets see' em

a friend gave this to me today he got it from an esate sale looks real old its pale yellow eridisent with swierls in it i put the mag lite uner it to give it some effect.its going in my roadster. there was some other knobs in there he had one in there that was bako lite and round with a ressed br*** or glod tag in it that said ford 1935 with a picture of a building and the word san diego under it any clue of it? lets see pics of knobs say pre 1950 no skulls, hand grenades , bar taps , tiki's i want to keep this to old hot rod stuff. thanks billy

 

Like this? It came on my '41 Plymouth. I'm ***uming it's aftermarket, the original was plastic I'm sure.
I haven't tried polishing it up yet.

 

Probably a souvenier from the California-Pacific International Exposition that was held in Balboa Park. Ford was a big participant in the expo.

This shifter knob was on the coupe when my father bought it back in the early 80s with the original 216. It was there until the car got the V8 and the Gennie shifter several years later. I found it about a year ago when going through some of his things, and hope to put it back on the car eventually.

The black spots on it are just overspray. I can s****e it off with my thumbnail.

I have the San Diego knob on my roadster.
I friend gave it to me.Almost worn out,love thinking about someone driving their old Ford around the country..

The other one is a marble shift knob.
One of the founding members of the Denver Roadsters once told me.
"back in the day,if you didn't have a marble shift knob and a timing tag on your dash,
you weren't ****"

I wanted any one of the commeritive Ford knobs,watched on e-bay etc.
Seen them sell for more them $400.0
I was after a "Century of Progress" from the world's fair in Chicago.

They have done repops of some of them.
So if you see a perfect one..could be a repop (1970's?)

Also seen people take the coins given away at those events and mount them in knobs,
and p*** them off as old knobs.(wrong design)

I have no intention of p***ing it off as original but I like the one I made for my 34 P/U. 33$ total investment.

 

Love a good shift knob post. I picked this one up a little while ago, its two-tone bakelite. I heard they came on auburns.

Mine I guess is 60's,,I don't have the shifter,,just the handle which I use for opening my garage door...I have not seen any of these Rocket handles but if I show mine maybe someone might show us theirs..

 

I have two of the san diego ones. Ford built the building on the knob that now houses the aerospace museum. They gave out the knobs at the show. I have a raffle ticket for a 35 ford and an ashtray. Oh and a 35 ford to put the **** in.

 

The onyx, marble and other polished stone shift knobs became fashionable in the early 30s. The swirl white and color and other combos or single color cast gl*** knobs were the poorman's stone knobs at about the same time. They faded away after WWII then the gl*** ones were revived in the late 70s and continued to be cataloged and sold into 90s. The polished stone knobs were revived in the 80s for about 5-6 years. We sold hundreds and hundreds of the gl*** ones over the years but the stone ones were expensive and sold very slowly while they were available.

I have one of those Rocket T-handles too. I think they were an after market handle, but I am not sure.

 

Picked this one up pretty cheap at an antique shop in N.H. It has big br*** threaded insert in it. Sorry, it's not a very good pic.

My Grandad p***ed away in 1973 and Granny asked me to help cleanup his collection of things he had brought home from the S.F. Ca. shipyards,He was a crane operator and I took 2 Large Truckloads of Br*** Valves Etc. Etc. to a $****per,a**** His belongings was this Shiftknob which I have in my 29 Ford Business Coupe.I remember him having this knob on his 36 Ford Pickup,was surprised when I found it,glad he kept it.
