Identify these "Sombrero" hubcaps

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 38fordpickup, Feb 6, 2012.

  1. Attaching a photo. I thought they were Cadillac but have been told they are not. If I can find out what they are, I'll post on the cl***ifieds here and find a good home for them. They are decent driver quality, unfortunately I only have 3.

  2. Trying again on the attachment

Kinda similar to a '53 Cad but different. Maybe a aftermarket?

I certainly am. It's like one of those pictures where you have to stair at it cross eyed to see the illusion. I never could because I have a corneal condition that screws with my ability to see 3d movies and the those pictures. I'll take your work for it ;)

It's a '52 Buick cap. I have 4 of them hanging in my garage. Steel only has to have 12% chromium to considered stainless and those grades can rust. Also, some of the best stainless steel will show signs of rust if it was in contact with mild steel; s****es, hammer marks, rust on the skin from when it was slid across a mild steel work bench, etc.

OK, just studied the original photo again...........I agree, it is a Buick cap and I wasn't focusing correctly.........funny how taking a break and coming back to it changed my eye's perception.

    Just deleted erroneous posts.......

Is one slice of humble pie enough? :)

It fooled my eyes too. Maybe the angle that the photo was taken at.

I scored a very nice set of 52 Buick Roadmaster sombreros myself and I would really like to know the size of original 52 Buick Roadmaster wheels. Anybody know the width and offset of these wheels?

width is 6 or 6 1/2" but "offset" is a bit harder to describe as the wheel center disc is quite concave compared to most wheel stampings. In other words, a different wheel with the same 'backspacing' would not likely have the required clearance on the front side due to a difference in shape.

Pontiac and Cadillac wheels from the 50's are closest and may clear the cap, but the clips are not correct to accept the Buick caps. I helped a buddy solve this problem with putting '52 Pontiac Sombreros on his Buick by making an adapter ring for his caps that extended the backside of the cap to bring the retainer slots in the cap (adapter ring) into contact with his Buick wheel clips. In his case, he could have solved the problem by using either Pontiac wheels or Buick caps, but he wanted to use what he had.

I picked three of them up, this past summer, for $20. Guy said the rim is a bit unusual, and they only fit that one rim. I was wondering what the actual dimentions were. Anyone got a picture of the rim they fit on? I really like them, and had hoped to run them on something, someday.

Here is the only pic I could find of the rims, this is my old '52 Buick that had the same hubcaps.
