So ive been forced to drive my car way to much latley. all of are cars are broke except the 50. (if i can keep the ole lady from driving over parking blocks and putting holes in the gas tanks i can get mine fixed)So two weeks ago i wanted to go thru some things one my car before i did any more long runs in it. I have a bunch of loose ends i wanted to get done now that billetproof is over with. But any way the big deal i needed to get at was the Alt. and pulley set up.

When i put the motor in i had a bitch of time getting all the pulleys to line up. Heres what im working with.
Motor is a 1985 305 out of my old truck. Alt is a 1975 vega unit. just the old school gm style with the 2 wire plug on top. (it was the one that was clocked right) To fit the 305 in my 50 chevy i had to run a short water pump.

So in order to line it all up i had to space out the w/p pulley and mount the Alt. with the lower bolt going into the passanger side head and i got this huge upper bracket from fathack. That seemed to work fine the belt was a little off but didnt really seem to mind being off a little.

The last week or so the belt has been giving me problems and making noise if i had any kind of load on the Alt. (headlights and such) So today the lower bolt decided to snap off and the belt went bye bye with it.

Ill include the best pic of my set up i have here (the car broke down 30 miles away at my moms) But now that you all know my story and sorry for being so long winded. What can i do to change this. i cant think of any where else to put this damn alt. i have to put it on the driver side now but i need to know how to mount it so it will work. i still have the stock brakets but they wont work with the short pump!

Show me what ya got cooking im stumped and burnt out on cars right now.

*edit* the hamb wont let me up load a picture right now but ill post it later.

Chevy used different methods to mount the alternator on short water pump engines...first was a metal bracket that bolte to the side of the exhaust manifold (rams horn), just like the early generator brackets. Next they went to a different exhaust manifold (rams horn) with two holes in the end. Then when they started putting holes in the ends of the heads in 69, the truck and Vette used a cast iron bracket that bolts to the end of the head.

And when folks put headers on the old engines, usually they use the bracket that the header folks sell that is held on by the front two header bolts, and supports the early style alternator bracket.

    http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/Proform/alternator_brackets.html

shows several brackets, the top and bottom two are the ones I'm talking about (notice they are discontinued! hah)

Which one you need depends on what exhaust manifolds you have.

Also the short water pump engines used different pulleys than the long water pump engines, probably you have the wrong ones on it now....

Could be your alt. front bearing going south too.
They are cheap ($8-12 aat a bearing supply) and easy to install.
Just watch where the alt is "clocked"! :D

I am using a low mounted alt. bracket kit, from Speedwaymotors. Works like a charm in my model A sedan, with a short pump '69 327. Sparky:D

I cant mount it low cause the fram rail and the steering all comes thru there. And i cant use a header bracket cause i have to use a 267 manifold on the driver side to clear the steering. Those are options i looked into when i put the whole deal together. But thanks for the suggestions. And its not a problem with the alt either. its only got 2000 miles on it. And i am using the correct water pump pulley. I have a long one and it wont even fit so i know the one i have works and lines up with the crank pulley. Its just a issue of getting the Alt. set in place some where.

Im allso using a intake with the oil fill on the front so that kinda rules out the "street rodder" bracket that puts it above the t-stat housing and shit.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. im heading out to the parts store to see what i can come up. I still cant get a pic to upload

  7. Well . . . I had a long bit written up, but the HAMB's data base is not accepting photos.

In any event, do a search for the alternator bracket that Tommy made for his roadster.
    Simplicity + and looks good.

Should be within the last couple of months.

maybe you could use the headers style bracket set, but instead of using the lower one that is offset, just make a flat plate that will replace it and bolt on the two front manifold bolts. Sort of like this:

  9. I have a stock mount bracket you can have, and some leftover tubing from when I hung my alternator. I might be out of all-thread, but I'll dig around. Yer welcome to it. I still want to see your grille too, so I can drop by later if you want. Whatever. PM me.

I got mine from Bill's Hot Rod Company. They look basically like this photo, but you can get them in black powder coat or bare steel if the chrome is too shiny for you. IMO, these don't look as "street rod" as many on the market (except for the allen-head bolts), but my (very limited) experience has shown that they fit better than the Alan Grove deals.

I don't hink they have a web site, but here's the "Old School" way to get in touch w/ them:

    Bill’s Hot Rod Company
    1064 E. Edna Pl.
    Covina, CA 91724
    (626) 332-1915

Edit: I should also mention that the setup I have mounts the alternator to the driver side, and I am using a long water pump in my 52. They have both the kinds that mount the alt. up high near the water neck, or outboard of the valve cover. They have both long- and short-pump versions of each style.

I don't know how much one of these boogers runs....but late last year I would guess - Streetrodder had an ad for a waterpump that had an alternator behind it and so you only ran one belt from your crank to your waterpump. If you are interested I can tear through the old rags and try and find the advertisement.

anyone else here know what I'm talking about? seen them?

    and yes I still read streetrodder - don't F -with me:D

Just go to http://www.alangrovecomponents.com and he'll have what you need. Has just about ever mounting application available for short and long waterpumps.

And his brackets come as bare metal for you to finish or not finish as you wish.
