Most are mounted behind/in front of and onto the radiator. I dont have any room behind, dont want to mount it to the front and very limited in space. Though it wont do as good of a job as the radiator, air p***ing though/around it at any speed is better then nothing. I was thinking to the underside of the body or maybe one of those aluminum finned things on the frame rail? any other options?
I have seen them mounted under running boards, between the frame rails, and between the trans and rear end. As long as air can move around it when you are driving it should be OK.
If you kook in the catalogs (PAW,Summit, ect.) there are coolers with thier own electric fans. You can mount almost anywhere there's space & a little air available. I'd use the radiator cooler & the aux. cooler to be on the safe side if the fan quit.
I mounted mine under the car, on the transmission crossmember, when I put one on my Model A. I used one of the B&M coolers, with the sturdier body, and it worked great. (I have a couple of pics, but there is some sort of problem, that wont allow me to upload them at this time)
On my 29AA in the mid 70's went to automatic and the ****** shop had me put it in front of rad. UGLY, I then moved it to the bottom of frame at rear of ****** mount. When I put it in the weeds in 1990, located under the splash apron. In 2000 went with cooler with fan between frame rail (Summit). This was my every day driver until last Nov. due to gas price had to get better mileage car. The ****** has only had filter and oil change during that entire time. I pull RV trailers with it that entire time. I do not run lines to radiator, only remote ****** cooler.
I mounted mine under the body along the frame. If you go this rout, make sure there is plenty of clearence between the exhaust and the cooler. There is a ****** cooler that looks more like a heat sink and should be safer under the car than a finned one. I wish I would have gone with that one but I haven't had any trouble so far.
I've got one of the long finned aluminum tubes mounted to my X member about halfway back (about middle of the driveshaft length) and it seems to be working out pretty well. I don't have any exhaust pipes under there either though. But if I did, they would be on the other side of the X member.
