You gotta love the simplicity of the venerable flatty. No wonder I'm a flatmotor nut!!!

Barny Navarro set a land speed record with a flatty running on 4(!) cylinders! Do that with your new $120,00 ZR1.

Pete. I have a flatty powered Shram air compressor that runs like a V4. Two center cylinders on one side a the two outers on the other side actually power the unit. The others 4 are the air compressor side. Just damn good motors. Here it is 59 years after the last American flatty V8 powered a US vehicle and were still talking about them and making 'em sing.

I love that! Who asked, "when did flatheads end being the best?" still and always is the answer.

Has anyone heard of Ed Bingsly (sp?) from Santa Rosa Calif? I've heard some stories of his flatheads cleaning up on OHV powered hot rods.

cause you never know when your gonna need to run your motor with a head missing...
    is neat though....

  23. I grew up north of Santa Rosa in the mid 60's and moved to there in 69. Bing's Speed Shop was the place to go for your flathead and small block Chevy speed equipment. Somewhere in around 1962-63 Hot Rod Magazine did an article about Bing and his Ford Flathead powered Willys coupe eating up the Corvettes on the drag strip. Seems this Willys would run Mid 12's.
Last I heard Bing was still around helping Chris Zootis of Healdsburg. I'm sure Vern Tardel can tell stories about Bing in the early days.
A great story was told about Bing, seems he also had a small block Chevy powered dragster that would tear up the drag strip and all compe***ors. People would protest, NHRA would tear a head off the thing to find him legal. Finally someone got smart and had them tear the opposite head off to find much bigger diameter pistons. oops!

  24. I just googled "Bings Speed Shop" the local Press Democrat Newspaper did and article on him. At 87 years old he's still going strong. I suggest you google it likewise and read about this legend of a man. There's a picture of his old Wills there too.

Back in the 50s my old man had one on a stand in the shop. A stock engine with only one head. He used to bet beers to visitors that it would run.........Fun stuff.

This seems to be one of those 'here, hold my beer, now watch this' kinda deals.
I admire flatheads, but I'm also a sbc fan. Wtf?

I used to build Model A air compressors, they run on two and pump air on two. They were pretty much std equipment on tire trucks in the 60s and early 70s
