mustang 2 is comp on the 50'.....but im gonna need 3 u-joint's because im fouling the motor mount...anyway.....looking for do's and dont's....max angles....heim setup...any help/ideas/pics is appreciated
Check the Flaming River website and look at their info. Also check out Borgeson U-joints. My expirience is when you use three joints you MUST have a support bearing of some type and the max angle of any single joint is 30 degrees.
Tips; Borgeson u's and double u's, make sure the shaft doesn't protrude into the joint and keep them under 35 degrees.
I was able to do it with just 2 borg joints, I will post you some pic tomrrow. Can you lengthen or shorten the colume to improve you angles, my top joint just clears the fire wall, you colud leave the stock colume long and maybe miss the mount. Yes you can run 3 joints with an stabliser, but its just more pieses in the puzzle.I had to trim my shock mount to clear . I have a power steering rack and the stub is a lot shorter. I hope this gives you some ideas, post a pick of your setup Please drill the DD shaft and set the allen screws deep into the shaft with lock tight. MrC.
Here is a link to a recent steering column build I did http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=666232 Lots of pics in that one should help you out a bit.
My current build has Mustg II pwr rack and steering. The steering column has two bearing supports. One of the supports I ended up moving one inch because I replaced the cast iron exh manifolds with Ford "Shorty" headers. There is a 8" double-steering u-joint that is two inches from the firewall and has a bolt going thru it and the shaft for quick dis***embly. I'm in the process of replacing the entire wire harness. SPEEDWAY Motors has a good selection of steerin components on page 82 of their catalog.
Here are some more pics. First pic shows the rod end bearing, this because I'm using 3 single joints and it's necessary to keep the whole linkage in place.
