I'm going to chop my 41 ford pickup and was wondering what the law was for windsheild hieght , i was told that it had to be 6" is there any truth to that not that i would go lower than 6"

I took the strut front susp.out and swaped in a 4" dropped tube axle with custom curtis rods

  2. I think if you have a 6 inch window on a 41 Ford pick up it would look odd. As far as the law goes, im not sure.

Manitoba = 10" of vertical view through the windshield. :(

  4. Better contact your local MVI. Every province and state is different.
    I agrre. A 6" on a 41' pu is to much chop.

I believe there likely is a windshield height requirement in the Motor Vehicle Codes of every State or maybe even a Federal one.
The ones I have seen say something like "no less than (X) inches of vertical vision height" or something to that effect, meaning a slanted windshield on a chopped car is measured at the bottom of the gl*** with the ruler standing straight up and an imaginary line perpendicular to the ruler drawn to the top of the gl***, NOT laying down on the gl*** from bottom to top.

not helpful......but I had the po-po threaten to write me a ticket for every "modification" from as delivered from the factory on my Chevelle during one stop....he eventually let me go, the original stop was for being too loud (flowmasters/2 1/2 tail pipes out to the bumper and tips). Moral of the story....if they want to screw with ya, they will...
PS, this was in Calif, hence the no help:eek:

I am sure logic, seat position and stance of vehicle (rake) will influence you potential to see out correctly.

Remember the further you are back from the windshield the more restricted you vertical view plus what ever else is affected.

Try driving at 70mph up or down a steep hill seating way back with a healthy chop job.
    It can get kinder scary...

I think the 6 in rule was something from scta rules. A 6 in surface was required. 6 in on that type of a truck would be pretty small.

Just be very sure that after the gl*** and rubber is installed if using one does not narrow the vertical opening to make it illegal. The measurements are for clear opening with everything installed. I've seen it happen.

OK I chopped my 41 ford truck 4", It looks good but 1 more inch would have been to much! I would have been just as happy with 3" - I think if you go 6" it will look like it was squashed! Oh and if you chop it much you will have to cahnnel your rear window, or you will not have one ( I am gonna have a 2" tall one with a 4" chop )

From the Ontario Highway Traffic Act:
    Windows to afford clear view

    74. (1) No person shall drive a motor vehicle upon a highway,

    (a) unless the windshield and the windows on either side of the compartment containing the steering wheel are in such a condition as to afford the driver a clear view to the front and side of the motor vehicle; and

    (b) unless the rear window is in such a condition as to afford the driver a clear view to the rear of the motor vehicle. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 74 (1).

Pretty subjective. I bet you'd define a "clear view" differently than a cop would. You'd better do some research.

I have a buddy looking to do a 41 as well. Don't think we're going to go that low though. As for the law, I think in Cali you cant have obstructed view. So my guess is that like most laws, it is up to the officer and his opinion of the matter. I just say, do what makes you happy, the tickets will come either way. If not for mods, for speeding.

HILLBILLY HOT RODS, US Laws be different than Canada Laws on gl***, etc. you might want mastergun1980 to send you pics of his '41 as a reference. maybe run a tape line as to where final windshield opening will be and sit in truck with seat you are going to use. in those cabs not a lot of leg room. moved gas tank to rear of truck? post pics here as you make progress.

Great post. Yes, it is a very subjective issue. I was ticketed in 1969 or 1970 for "obstruction of vision". That leaves a whole bunch open to interpretation.
6" will look completely out of proportion for that car. It will look lame...

That value was 7", Bernie... Pierson Bros. '34 Coupe got its w/s slanted to chop it as much as they did, and still have a measurable 7", to be SCTA legal.

I would post it but i don't want to get banned the ***y lady is my wife and she does have a thong on and a top with nothing realy showing :D , i would post it here if the admin sez its ok and i won't get banned for it .

The 41 ford pickup that i am going to chop is channeled 4-5" already and i am going to chop 5.5"-6.0" out of the front pillars and lean them back and i will chop 4" out of the back window , no hood and the front end has a 4" dropped tube axle with a cross over setup and with a spring perch off a 3" round tube not a spring cross member .

I will start a build thread soon .

    Thanks Mike
