Does anyone have photos of the midget auto races held at Balboa Stadium in San Diego, Cal. in the 1946 to 1948 time frame. My mother was a trophy girl there a few times and the photos have vanished.

  2. Jim, do a search, there is a book for sale here called, I think, "Southern Calif, Jalopy Racing" or sumthin .... really cool book (I have one) and it shows midgets .... dont know about your timefrom though.

Its my understanding the track photo from Balboa took his negatives with him to the pearly gates.

I spent a few nites on those cold concrete bleachers in the late fifties-early sixties.

Heck, you got a low post count, I'll make it easy on you ...

The lady at Carrell has kind of a scant out fit for the time.
A 77 car field on a track that's barely wide enough for 4 cars, that would cause some excitement. Now we know where all the Deuces went.

Those 77 jalopies at Balboa Stadium were asked to do a PR photo on the front straight and the results are the photo seen. It was NOT the line-up for a race but it is just about the greatest jalopy photo ever taken, and is in the book "Memories of the California Jalopy ***ociation." The book has a few photos of Balboa jalopies but none with trophy queens.

My Dad in his Kurtis V8-60 at Balboa Stadium, 1947. At that time there were midget races somewhere in California 7 nights a week. The drivers loved Balboa when the fleet was in. The stadium filled to over flowing, and it paid the highest purses in the state.

How did a thread about midgets at Balboa Stadium turn into jalopys at Carell Speedway???

  7. I think they prefer to be called little auto races, haha...... awesome pics of all those 32's

Dean, probably my fault, referencing the Jalopy book for its few midget pictures at balboa, dont know how Carell came into things.

Tom, yes thats the book. I bought it online looking for Balboa jalopy pics (they are rare) looking for family shots .... disappointed only a few of Balboa, but remembered it had a few midget shots. Nice book .... loaned out with a waiting list! LOL
