Alright guys i just bought a 56 bel air 2 door sedan. In the trunk is a cast iron powerglide transmission with a torque converter, and an adaptor that bolts to the front between trans and motor..I would like to get rid of it.Anyone know if they are worth anything? The former owner said it is out of a 56 chev.

Their value would be only for a restorer, IMO. Even still, it's no big $$. Basically zero.

hey it may not be worth alot but not so along ago that was said about 49-54 chevs and now they are cool cars, the same with straight six engines. some one will want it and they hobby can not afford to lose more parts or cars to the scrapers, if you can store it some one will need the parts

I pulled one out of a '56 I once had. Couldn't give the thing away. even called a couple transmission shops that are known for working on older stuff and offered it to them for free. No takers.

I rebuild abought 1 of those a year, if I lived anywhere close to you id pay you something for it,
they don't make hard parts for these anymore.
don't scrap it, someone will eventually need it.

A year or two ago I scrapped 50,000 lbs of stuff that "someone will want some day". My yard is looking pretty nice now.

  19. My left nut still twitches when I think about a cast iron PG. The last one I wrestled was in 1975 or so. Even separating it from the engine on the garage floor was too much like work.

Hoard it up until the scrap iron price spikes up.

  20. Yes I agree :D

  21. I can't remember, but there is a difference between the aluminum V8 PG's and the 6/4's (the racers want the 8's).

The only folks interested in the cast iron PG would be restorers... if it were mine, I'd dump it :)

If i store it?It will have to sit out side in the weather. So if it sits for to long it wont be any good anyway right?

There's a slight difference in low gear ratio---1.82 for sixes, 1.76 for V8s.
Some of the six cylinder aluminum PGs were air cooled, and had two cooling holes in each side of the bell housing. I replaced the dead PG in my 327 powered '64 Malibu SS with one from a six and, although it was originally air cooled, it still had the two hookups for cooler lines with brass pipe plugs in them.

I'm still running one in my 55, daily ( for the most part), so they are not completely extinct....although I admit if it quit today it would just make me get off my butt and replace it.
One difference is you pull it all the way down to get it in reverse....not between Park and neutral.

That's the problem... Stop trying to give it away and put a price on it. As was said before the racers want the aluminum ones. Damn near bullet proof. I knew a guy that ran an air cooled one in his circle track car. Blew the motor long before the trans gave out.
