Do the Edmunds intakes flow much better than the factory 2x4 intakes? Can newer carbs, such as AFB's (or the Edelbrock equivilents) be adapted very easily to the factory intake? I have a factory 2x4, without any carbs, and the price of actual dual quad WCFB's is kinda scarey.

Does anybody know the CFM rating of the '49 single two barrel carbs?

Carter did not publish CFM ratings on O.E. carbs until the late 1970's.

I run two Rochester 2-G carbs on an Edmund manifold on my 289 Studebaker (mild build-up) with progressive linkage. The front carb is the primary with the idle circut and choke, the rear is a secondary (gutted). Same carbs as what GM used for their 3-Deuce set-up. I had to re-jet to a smaller size because of running too rich. It now runs great, and gets it on when I punch in the secondary. I think what your going for with an early look (49-early50s) the 2-Deuce set-up would be more appropriate to the era.

Actually, It is not a silly idea. A hamber posted up pics of a very rare (and unknown to most of us) 4 one barrel, logs for an early Olds. I thought it was silly until you do the math on cfm. Who knows how 8 would do, but give it a try. I would think you need small one barrels..but..

    I vote 3 x 2. had a 2 x 4 myself and sold it in favor of the 3 x 2.

I personally think the the vintage look would be 2 x 2, time wise this would be before the 3 X 2 were available. Some times less is more! The early rods I remember in the 50's had fresh from the wrecking yard "mills" cleaned up some even got a paint job. The early rodders sometimes used all their money just buying the used engine and trans adaptor. Your project brings back memories!

  12. Thanks for all the help!

I am leaning toward the Offy 2x2 intake because of the style and period I am after.

Problem is I have a factory '59 Caddy tri-power sitting on it now....and 3 carbs sure look good on the top of that long ass engine.

I am the most indecisive person on the planet!

If those are real tripower end carbs, I'd use them for sure. A real 3x2 will outperform a 2x2 on all issues, and no fighting the idle issues that "might" happen with 2x2. If you get even a tiny bit of slop in the 2x2 connector link, you can be idling on one carb, and not know it.

whatever makes it good for you!
2 x 2' s are nasty looking but eat the go go juice...3 x2's look neater in my opinion, don't overfuel as bad and if you stay off the go fast button get far better fuel economy, as is anybody cares about that!;)
