Agreed. Cool drag stuff but completely missing the soul that made the first one great.
I do dig the last shot of Milner's coupe heading off to it's date with destiny, that stuck with me.

Best thing about MAG was Fremont drag strip. I remember Chet the starter from the times I spent there in my youth.

Well, this morning was Stanley Cramer's "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World" with an all star cast including Spencer Tracy, Ethel Merman, Sid Ceaser, Milton Berle, a 61 Impala bubbletop, tons of Mopars, a bitchin Power Wagon tow truck, a sinking 46-7-8 Ford conv...

It's really not as bad of a movie as many people think. I actually really like it. It's just difficult to watch it without trying to compare it to the first one which is virtually impossible. The first one can almost be considered a masterpiece to many and is #1 when it comes to asking car people what their favorite movie of all time is. The second actually stands on it's own fine. The original AG story in 1962 was just so care-free . . . . these young people had just graduated High School and and the extent of their problems was trying to get a pretty girl's phone number, trying to buy alcohol when underage, or just hearing that some new guy is in town with a fast car looking for you. It's funny that when you're that age, you think those kind of things are real problems! Well, in the sequel, these same young people start to see what REAL problems and REAL life are all about! Everything changes and they realize just how good they had it in the Summer of '62. We've all been there ourselves. Anyway, I consider it such a "darker" movie and I just love the Drag Racing scenes at Fremont even if the dialogue is really corny, typical Hollywood scriptwriting. I'd like to edit just the John Milner part of the movie into a stand-alone DVD.

Saw it in the theaters when it was first release and the only parts I liked was the drag racing and Vietnam segments. The rest sucked.

Hard to watch it without comparing, so.... I didn't. BUT, I played the original, since it was on my mind.

I actually like it, no comparison to the first film of course, but its a different kind of movie. The scenes at the drag strip are more than worth the time to watch it. All in all its actually an enjoyable movie to watch in my opinion.
