  1. Any guys from Maryland remember the car club "Beltsville Beaters" ? what did the club logo look like? Did they have a logo?

I grew up in Beltsville,1950 to 1975, knew lots of car guys but never heard of them.
Do you know what time frame they were supposed to be from?

Did they have club plaques? Long shot but Obriens has a listing of clubs, some with describtions.

    Might be worth a look?

I just dragged out my copy of Beltsville Shell by Cary Thomas. It covers the time period roughly mid 60's - mid 70's but couldn't find any references to the "Beltsville Beaters" there.

Was just thinking, since you grew up on Yucca St, have you given thought to try and connect with Gary Manley (definantly old sckool hot rodder!).

As far as I know the Beltsville Beaters were a loose nit group of guys. Members included Ron Thorp, Butch Martin, Jimmy Hatch John Baxter Billy Armstrong and a few other lowlifes. The name changed often aka Lowriders and maybe Rusty Nuts. Just a bunch of car guys still doing it today. I'm glad to have known them all and still see many on a weekly basis.

......Lifelong hot-rodders all. :) What is the proper name for the award Mike gives out at Jalopyrama that Butch received last yr. and John received this year? :) All of these guys would be in a Maryland Hot-Rodders Hall of Fame.

Some other members of the Beltsville Beaters would have been Tommy Hunt aka Biggie, Steve Hunt, Rob Beard,Chick Smith,Buzzy Vogel and Richard Glymph. All great guys. I just got back from the GNRS Butch,Richard and I roomed together. You're right ,all Hall of Famers and I'm proud to have them as lifelong friends.

The name of the award we give out at the JALOPYRAMA is Maryland Hot Rod Icon.

I think calling them a "club" is a bit of a stretch. I think they were more anti-club than anything else. I remember it being very tongue in cheek. They were always there on Wed. night cruise nights over the years but I've never seen a "logo".

...Thanks. That's it. I couldn't think of it's proper name. Geezin' I guess. On a sad note, I heard we lost Buzzy Vogel just a few weeks ago. I think he upholstered the seat in my '40 Coupe almost thirty yrs. ago when the previous owner had it.:(

  14. I don't know how much of a "club" they were. if they were organized to the point of having a plaque or not. Growing up in Beltsville, I thought it would be neet to know something about this.
I know Gary Manley but don't have any contact info for him. Gary would be one to ask.

Pretty much of the info on this is what it was and I don't thing Manley was involved at all. No logo. No plaque. No meeting. No dues. It got started at ***berland when they wanted to compete in softball and volleyball. They needed a name and I believe Buzzy came up with name. Oh it didn't help. Vintage Tin won softball and volleyball. Now that should start some ****. Later

Some of the current Rusty Nuts (former Vintage Tin of Maryland street rod club members) were the award winning softball and volleyball champs. Compe***ion was held in ***berland (Western Md. Street Rod Club) and Mayo Beach (VTM picnic) and other areas during the 70s and early 80s. VTM members also won the national Tug o War compe***ion at the NSRA Nats in St. Paul, Mn. Some of the VTM members then who pulled to the victory were Rich Ayres, Plum Thomas, Big Dave, Nick Nicaise, Al Bateman aka Vegas, Howard Wetzel, & myself :) The Beltsville Beaters weren't at St. Paul, but it wouldn't have mattered anyway. They woulda lost there too!

...Sounds like the makings for a re-match at next years' Jalopyrama with the losers buying the winners lunch consisting of a Beefalo Bob roast beef sandwich and a slice of Dangerously Delicious pie along with a donation to the Providence Center.:)

Yeah right! They better line up a lot of wheel chairs, gurneys and ambulances.

:D Capitol and So. Maryland used to have some serious matches in volleyball. We even had a winter time match one year is a school gym with real referees. That was a mistake.:D Capitol entered the tug of war ONE time at Mayo. It was a draw after no one was able to move the other team in the sand. We pulled our guts out and never entered a tug of war again. I was messed up for over a week and I was relatively young then.

    I'll watch.

Chester Salute who owned the Phillips 66 in Beltsville for many years is being burried today. I don't know if he was ever a Hot Rodder back in the day but he was certainly a Beltsville icon.

I think they may have been a spin off of the "Bad Apple" street rods with Tim White & Rob Sundy?

My dad worked for Chester in the seventies till he got sick and had to stop working.
Chester was a great guy, would do what ever he could to help you, sorry to hear he p***ed away. He would have been a great anchorman on a tug of war team!

Casey, maybe we're getting "Beaters" mixed up with Baxter's dog, Beater?

Hi '46 International, I heard there were some questions about the Beltsville Beaters. We started about '71. I rented a 2 car garage on the grounds of Christian Brothers Monastery, Ammendale Rd. and US1 on the North end of Beltsville to work on my '39 Ford Dlx. Cpe. Then a bunch of my friends decided to rent "the BARN" (oldest brick barn in MD, Jim Noll thinks it's oldest in the US, 1880-1890). Phil Fisher and I rented the top floor and two groups of guys rented and divided up the lower floor. We all hung out at the Barn and worked on our cars. This probably would be considered Beaters' headquarters. Our second home would have been The Rod Shop at US1 and Powdermill Rd.
The rules of the Beltsville Beaters were that there were no rules, no dues, no meetings, no officers and about the only guidelines were that you would go "puttin' in your ****" (driving our mostly pre War Hot Rods) and "no Sniveling" (*****in'). Our m***cot was a rubber frog that was attached to my aircleaner.
The Beaters included myself (Gary Manley) '39 Ford and '33 Austin, Jim Noll '41 Ford and '55 Chevy, Steve Bragonier '39 Chevy and 29 A roadster pickup, Steve Reed '40 Ford 4dr., Larry Colbert '40 Ford 4dr. and '40 cpe., Edard Powers ' 31 A roadster, Billy Armstrong '32 Ford 3 window, Bobby Dietrich '36 Chevy truck, Jeff Taylor '48 Plymouth 4dr. There could be more but at this time that is all this "Long Haired Maggot" can remember. If any of this is incorrect I claim brain damage do to "Old Timers" and during the '70s drug and alcohol abuse.
There are a lot of guys that we went puttin' with as mentioned by others but the Beaters were mostly Barn guys. I have pictures of the Beater banner at a Spencer, Iowa rodrun in '75 when I drove my cpe. across country with my girlfriend Martha, pics of the Barn and some of the cars but I can't figure out how to include them. Maybe I can figure it out at another time.
If there is any interest I can tell you some of the tales of our misadventures which include a haunted monastery, or a ghost, or a dead ****** and even some car stories. Gary Manley

Welcome Gary. I know you have some stories. Some I might have heard but that's OK. Lots of young guys here that think that they know the 60s from the magazine pictures. I don't know if you have any pictures of your car on the net but you can copy this one if you need one.

A not so warm and fuzzy memory.:) **** happens when you drive them.:D
