I need some help with these brakes. I purchased them as 53-56 f100 but they are not since the spindle bolt pattern is not corrent. I am installing them on a pair of 42 ford spindles that have a 3 1/4 x 3 1/4 bolt pattern. The ones in the picture has a 4 1/4 x 3 3/4 bot pattern.

Do you know what year these are for?

    Thanks
    Jeff

I really suggest you forget about the truck backing plates. Richard Lacy and Dick Spadaro both conclude that nothing really works right. The backspacing is wrong. Some suggest to put the drums on the outside rather than the inside of 40,48,f-1 hubs. The hubs will not go inside Buick drums without cutting them down. They still arn't spaced right. The shoes do not line up inside the drum surface and hangout.

What year did the bolt pattern on the backing plate change were it will not work on the 36-48 spindles?

  6. 1956 was the last year of the early bolt pattern

You would have to find out what size the 53/56 shoes are.

Napa says that they are 11x2 so if your shoes are 11x2 they should work.

They are showing that the 56 front wheel cylinders are 1-1/16.

They also show the bearings and seals for the 56 but you will have to mix and match inner bearings and seal. There is a thread on here that has the numbers and maybe someone has it saved and can post the link. I think the outer bearings are the same as Ford only used a couple of different outer bearings for about 70 years.

The 1953 to 1956 Ford F100 brakes do fit properly to the early Ford Spindles. I have had them on my modified for six years. First heard about the conversion in the early 1970's, yea I'm old. Some grinding is needed on square back spindles and on the radius of the inside bearing where it seats aqainst the spindle. Speedway sells the inner bearing and seal as a kit, the outer bearing is the standard or original Ford. The 1948 through 1952 F1 brakes have a different hub which I believe causes drum to backing plate interference but supposedly can be ground or turned to make them usable also. Do a search here on the Hamb for 1956 Ford F100 brakes. Pretty much answers all your questions.

  9. Actually the square back spindles fit as is and the roundback spindles need a little grinding to clear.

'48-'52 F-1 brakes fit with no problem either, the hub and drum are different than the F-100; but the
interface to the backing plate ends up in the same place.

If you'll look in the Tech archives, there is a pretty good article on this posted by Deuce Roadster.
