So, most of you know I'm making my '50 Chevy into an early '60s custom. Originally I was going to leave the stock column shift using Kugel linkage to the 350 Turbo. But having difficulty finding an appropriate steering wheel that will work on the stock steering column (most wheels have a deep dish), I have decided to upgrade the steering column. Yes, I could still use a column shifter but I have also decided to use swivel bucket seats so I think a floor shifter would be better looking. What type of shifter would look best in this aplication? I don't want a black plastic box sitting on the hump and I really didn't want to use a console (ok, maybe a small one). What are my options?
I had a Hurst auto shifter on a TH350. But the car also had a 4spd originally, so the hump and boot were there for it to stick thru. Nothin like a Hurst for good looks, and period correct too...
The answer is as close as your JC Whitney catalogue. I don't know if they're still called Spark-o-Matic shifters, but it's the same deal.
Donzie...shortening the original column is really simple...I took 8 inches out of mine to fit a '61 Olds wheel. I can provide details if needed... Brian
Donz...using a dished wheel is difinitely '60's...go for a '59 Olds wheel... shorten the column... R-
Brian, yes I would like details on shortening the column. What Hurst shifter is it that looks like a 3/4 speed (with a rubber boot and chrome trim ring) but is actually for an automatic? I remember seeing one of these years ago and thought it was pretty cool. Maybe I'd leave the cluch pedal hanging just to throw people off. Is there a small console/shifter combo that would work better?
Hurst Quarter Stick. They even take the 4-speed knob. We saw one of these in a V8 Chevy II and it had us fooled until we looked at the floor.
I am running a Lokar transmission mount shifter in my Falcon with a Mr. Gasket shift boot. It looks like a 4 speed and not out of place at all. It's also operated by a rod instead of a cable, much more solid. Worth the money IMHO.
