I'm thinking that American Nostalgic West Group needs to buy Irwindale as a Club track.

Funny I was Telling Eddie on the way back from CHHR that I wanted to go out there and run on that track before it was too late. I just didnt think a couple months later was already too late.

Dale Good job on the wheels. Did you get to display at Pomona, Any pics?

Ken, that would put you in your mid to late 50's now. How do you feel about that?

How can it be that Southern Ca. does not have a decent drag strip or a whole motorsports park? I don't get it. There has to be money to be made with all of the hot rods and year round good weather. Brian

    Steve

I had a friend that went over there in 74, But like you said it was all Different by then.

Actually I was only 6 then and Evil Kenevil was my Hero. I've always loved the Drag Racing though.I guess my Hey Day was in the mid eighties . Probably the last time for anything resembling good old Drag Racing. You Could almost pick up any Muscle car for under 6 Grand. My High School was Packed with SS Chevelles, Mach 1 Mustangs, GTO's all over the place. My First High Scool Drags had over 400 Vintage Muscle Cars in the pits, Everyone a Daily Driver. Heck Eric ( SOHC 427 ) was cruising our main strip with his 64 R code Galaxie with a Cammer in it as his only source of transportation.. Everyone working crappy Gas Station jobs all so that we could all hang out in front of Super Shops Drinking some Bad Beer And trying to figure out how we can afford to buy the new Holley something or other to make the car go faster.
Back then it seemed like it would last forever. Within 4 years they were able to shut down all of the cruising and the Muscle cars were starting to disapear from the High School parking lots. Its Never been the same since.
I only wish I could of seen the Sixties in person.By Far The Best decade for any kind of Racing.

We went over to visit the Williams in the pits. Very nice people, and waited to see if I had any questions when we were checking out the car, even though they had to run to help someone with tires. I was BLOWN AWAY by this car, and what it has (or lack of) and it runs 11.30's!!!

Dale;it used to run high tens!!!! NHRA kept factoring the combo because all the scrub guys could not stand getting whipped by a little 289!!!!They toned it down and moved up a couple classes.I've know Gary for many years, used to work on him to build me a SS 289,he always talked me out of it!!! I must have a million pictures of his Comet!!We were at LACR for their last National Open and Gary watched me make a pass, loved my Comet,I had to get a bigger helmet!!!! ROY.

Ken,one of the things I really liked about drag racing in the 1960s was top fuelers didn't have reversers.I used to go to 75-80 Drag Way and loved watching the fuelers do their burnout and then drive back to the lights and turn around. Also,Sam Auxiers shop was real close to where I lived.I went to school with Rick Auxier and would get to visit the shop on occasion. My friend had a 65 Caliente and we actually got to use one of Sams glass hoods.Thats when I started liking 64-65 Comets, especially Cyclones.

OK to warn you this is kinda lame but pretty cool at the same time. A new girl started at my work about a week and a half ago, well yesterday as I was punching the time card I happened to see her last name... Proffitt .I thought nah couldn't be.

So today she comes over to look at the piece I'm turning on my lathe and I had to ask." Do you have a relative named Hayden" she replies "the drag racer" I was like "ya the drag racer" she said ya he's a distant relative but my dad talks about him and the cars he used to race.I couldn't believe it what's the chances!!!

I didn't press to hard for stories yet ,don't wanna freak her out, but I did tell her I'm restoring a comet similar to the one like he used to race. She thought that was pretty cool saying her dads into NHRA and stuff .So I'll see if I get any stories from her in the future. Told ya it was lame but pretty cool....Jim

Roy,not much new since I updated Saturday just some finish welding and some grinding on the floor pieces I put in The car is pretty much to the point of stuff that I feel comfortable with fixin, the quarters need fixed so I'm gonna let the body man do that I think. Now with spring gettin close I gotta start getting my landscaping stuff ready for my business I have on the side, kinda sucks but that's what funds my toys. So the updates will be slow ,but I wanna get the engine compartment painted and engine stuff mocked up and ready to go over the summer then car will go in the fall for paint...Thanks Jim

You get any runs in with the new traction bars yet? Dry hops in front of the shop or anything? Inquiring minds want to know.

No Comets here, but thought you guys might like this pic. This was a 1966 newspaper ad here in Oklahoma City, Ok. Dub Richardson Ford was a large dealership. This Hi-Performance Dept. was a seperate little building where all the goodies were. Pictured are 5 Shelby Mustangs and a Fairlane. Ah, the good old days!

Nothing yet, but we were able to take it for a lengthly drive. I felt a small increase in rear ride stiffness, but very small. So- this may mean no binding? Since our test track shut down (temporarily) I'm looking for the next closest place for some test/tune.....

This is from the local track here in 1964. They tore down that tower seen in the background this past week.
