Who has an affordable Disc Brake conversion for a '64 Ford Galaxie?.......Have any of you tried any that are exceptionally good?
My friend uses the one from Dearborn Cl***ics as you can keep your 14" wheels[he uses XL500 caps].The car is a daily driver, going on 4 years of use,no issues. If you are not concerned about going to 15" wheels the early 70s big Ford spindles and discs bolt on. ROY.
I did the scarbird brackets on my 64 fairlane and it bolted right up and was cheap. I had custom lines made from the calipers to the factory brake line at a cost of about $30.00. I was happy with it and ran the 14" rim. You will have to have the center hub of the rotor turned down to fit the center hub hole on the 14" rim. Also I had to run a 1/4 spacer for upper control arm clearance. On my 64 falcon the previous owner installed 69 Torino spindles and brakes. They work good too.
My body ran the late 70 T-bird set up and is fighting alignment issues with his. The spindle have a 2* difference then the original ones. He is not the first to have this problem, he now needs to cut the top hats off the frame and move them in or switch back to the drums.
We have used Master Power with good results.........and scarebird will work also...for racing, Aerospace does our stuff that is on the 63. late 70s T. Bird and LTD stuff will work with some lower ball joint work. M.
I used SSB , Stainless Steel Brakes , On my Falcon and it was cool. All Ford parts and numbers. NOT CHEAP!! but it works well
I used these on my 63 1/2 Galaxie. Ended up having to install a vacuum ***ist also. Without the vacuum ***ist they were ****, way worse than drum brakes. Whats wrong with the brakes that are on it now?
I used HAMBer HOTROD428's Kit with the stock spindles on my '62 Monterey (same ch***is as a '64 Galaxie). He provides the brackets to use Granada rotors with Monte Carlo Calipers. Here is a pic with the disc brake conversion on, and a link to his website. Good Luck http://hotrodsandbrakes.com/default.aspx
It just doesn't stop like I think it should......looking for a cheaper way to put disc on it than spending $1000.
I believe the 64 and 57 frames are the same, I used 76 torino spindles, you need to ream the ball joint taper on the lower. The spindles are around, cougars, elites, motegos. If you want to go cheap, you don't have to go power. Although the power dual master cylinders with mounts and linkage can be had for 2-250$ You can buy the rotors and calipers cheap enough at the parts house. This conversion does drop the front end 1 1/2 to two inches. If that isn't for you, a conversion bracket can be bolted onto your spindles, then you buy mustang rotors, S-10 calipers. The one I know of is called scarebird. I'm sure there are more. I also saw all in one kits for under a G. Mark
