Has any one heard of a brand new crate motor blowing the oil filter off with too high of oil pressure, from just trying to start it. Chevy 350 310 hp.

    MM

  2. Have not heard about that particular issue, but several other bad things on GM crate engines....one had all rod bolts loose found during inspection prior to start up. Another lunched after about 100 miles......no pre-start up checks made. Lesson here is to take it apart to check EVERYTHING.....do not assume it was assembled correctly.

What type of oil filter? I have seen some Fram's bulge out and explode with high pressure pumps, then we put a wix on it and it's fine. ???????????????????

Wouldn't figure more than 50/60 pounds of pressure...? Is it a gm crate motor?

What series engine is it and who built it. Some of these motors have close to 100 psi oil pressure. Did it come with an oil pump and filter or did you install them? If it has a distributor, you can use a shaft and drill to turn the pump.

  9. Takes an awful lot of doing to rip good and proper threads out of a filter, or tear the top off of one.
I have been finding bad threads in filters lately.

Valve in oil pump. If it sticks shut and won't release the pressure, something has to give. The fact that the pump is new doesn't rule it out. Generally a stuck oil pump valve will blow the ring seal on the filter or the gasket on the back of the intake. Did anyone look at the oil pressure guage when you started the engine?

  12. I have blown oil filters apart on performance engines . Reving the engine with the oil not up to operating temps can do it with some of the thicker racing oils ...50w I also must mention I had the oil filter bypass blocked off. A blocked off bypass forces all the oil to go through the filter. I have since changed to Oberg screen filter systems used in oval track racing ....No more problems

Back in the day, Pontiac engines sometimes did this. They had a hole in the center of the oil pump screen and when the plastic teeth came off the timing chain they would get into the pump and plug the bypass valve. I had one blow the filter off so I put a Baldwin filter on it. It held high oil pressure for a while then it dropped to nothing. It blew the plugs out of the oil galley in back of the timing gear.

I had that problem on a SBC and it was the pressure relief valve stuck in the the oil pump.
