I have the 49 Pontiac w/ the 6 volt battery. I hooked up my charger to it and its not even lighting up. I know my chargers ok because I hooked it up to the 56' battery andit lit right up. Is there an option besides buying a new battery? I know growing up that you could put acid in some batteries... Any suggestions?
Some/most battery chargers won't start to charge if the battery is dead flat. Hook another 6v battery with jumper cables to get it to trip. Then it will charge, but no gaurantee that the battery will hold a charge if it's real old.
Or you can daisy chain a charged battery with jumper cables or alligator clips and wire also. Newer chargers need to "see" an excite source before they will start charging. Like the excite wire on a GM alternator.
Simple test. Turn on the charger to 6v low amps with no battery hooked to it. Tap the charger's two hook-up clamps together. No spark="excite type" charger Sparks=need a new battery If your charger needs an "exciter current" hook two batterys together (one with some charge in it) with jumper cables-Pos to Pos Neg to Neg. After a few minutes unhook the exciter battery.
If you have an old battery charger, one old enough to have a 6v setting, then it kinda implies that you have a defunct battery. But you never know...maybe screwing around with it for a while will get it to sort of look like it's working sort of. I haven't had much luck that way.

48 chubby described what I was meaning. Pos. to pos., and neg. to neg. with a working battery! Either with jumper cables or by another means of connecting them, such as alligator clips with wires connecting them.
Time to buy a battery. Time to budget some funds for a good battery charger too if you gonna be messin with old cars.
batteries are actually a good value about $60 for 60 month battery works out, for all the work it does, to picking up a returnable can or two a day.
IF you can't afford a new battery , try putting a few asprin in your old battery, and then charging it up. I have seen this work before. won't make it new but might help for a while. i know it sounds crazy.
and when you do get a battery, go to walmart and get a $25.00 battery tender, so this doesn't happen again. JAN.
Walmart has Battery Tenders for $25, really? Are they 6 Volt variety? My 6V BT's cost $39 each and I looked for the best price, and that was 4 years ago.
Tractor supply, Orschellins, Bluestem, those kind of places that are tractor and farm equipment suppliers. You could also get a 6 Volt Optima, but they run about 150 dollar. And from what I heard, the quality is questionable now. Had one for over 10 years before I killed it. Was great.
