I recently acquired a 1962 Comet Custom with what I was told had a ford 144. Well I now I am not sure. The vin tells me it has a 170(???) 2H12U531822. From what I understand the U= 170. On the engine block I found the code C4DE 6015-A. After some reading am I right to say this is from a 64 Falcon? I still cannot find the block code to determine if it's a 144 or 170. I need all the help I can get. I am trying to fix some carb/starting issues . It's currently got a Holley 1909.
C4 means that its first application was in '64. Ford could have cast that same block for years. But one thing sure, it isn't the original '62 engine.
The 144s were painted blue and the 170s were red, if it has not been painted. These things are prone to hard starting when hot, the fuel boils out of the carb when it heat soaks and floods the engine. If it is a cold start problem check the timing, the outer ring on the balancer will slip on these engines. My Falcon also starts hard after it has been in storage.
Well the engine is blue with the blue valve cover. So it's a 64 144? If that is the case would I still be ok with the 1909 ? I have not been able to get it to start yet. It turns and sounds like it is going to start but continues stumbling.
Exhaust manifold cast # is C0DE 9430-B Intake manifold is C5DE 6090-A. If this helps anyone, it just confuses me. Did the 144 have a blue block as well?
