I'm looking for a PS pump that will bolt to standard SBC brackets, but uses a remote resivoir. I've heard that the earily Cavilear/Sunbird uses such a pump. Any truth to that? I know the LT1 uses a remote resivoir, but will it bolt to standard brackets? Any other pumps you can recomend? Thanks.

Check on Chevy van power steering. The '91 I'm junking had a remote reservoir. Earlier ones should also.

Chat year engine do you have? Some '67-'
72 Chevy pickups used a remote resevoir setup.

I'm asking for a friend from another board. here was his initial post over there:

"I put stock power steering in my 56 Chrysler. I am using an alternator instead of the generator with the attached power steer pump . I don't want to use a chebby water pump, but will do away with the ****** cooler on the stock water pump ( this is for a 354 hemi) I got the PAW bracket that mounts a pre 1974 chev pump to the timing chain cover ,but the reservor is directly in the way of the water pump outlet. (kit designed for the chebby water pump) Hot heads kit is the same way. Has anyone successfully changed to an easier to obtain pump that will work?"

sunbirds are the small ones being sold for sbc applications. if you have to buy a bracket, make sure you ask for one for the small ps pump...(sunbird)

if you know anyone in the army the ps pump on the new m1114 HMMWV'S with the 6.5 diesel engine i'm pretty sure will bolt right up. if not it won't take much and in the whole time i've used em they're pretty bullet proof.

    Sounds familiar....

Here is what I did on the wife's '57 a few years ago.

I got tired of rebuilding the generator and always thought the Gen/Pump setup looked pretty ugly.

I used a pump off a late 70's early 80's Chevy big block 1 ton truck with the remote can.

Mounted the can on the fender well and made a bracket to mount the pump below the alternator.

Probably have 20 plus thousand miles on it without a whimper.

Auto rewire.. thanks for the pic. Is this somethng that can be found on a standard 1 ton chevy pu.. (like a dually) or does it need to be on a bigger rig.

  10. Actually a 1/2 ton with a big block will have the remote res. ps pump.

Also 66 chevell SS 396 cars had a remote fill setup too but that one would be kinda pricy these days.

The pump I used is off a '78 one ton big block truck.

The reservoir I found in the local wrecking yard. It differs from the ones on the trucks. It has a side outlet while the ones on the trucks have a bottom outlet.

Do you still have the PAW bracket? Paw are off the net and aren't selling anymore and I really need that bracket ASAP.
