i see on the speedway motors website there's a new division called "tuner's choice".....if you can't beat em' join em....i guess...when i drive my model A around the city, people rarely ever smile anymore..in fact they honk.because my ancient piece of crap is slowing down their hurried lifestyle.kids don't give a crap either....if my impala is parked next to a hopped up civic, they flock to the civic.supply and demand at it's finest...where do you think hot rods and customs will be 10 years from now?

Some of the NO-MINDS, who like to bash street rodders and so-called gold chainers, don't know how lucky they are. THESE groups of people are what have kept this hobby alive this far.

The state legislators, for many reasons, have been trying to kill-off the old car hobby for years and it's the large groups of street rodders and others, that can afford to hire lobbyests, who inform the legislators that we are a large and serious group of car enthusiasts.

If we can stay TOGETHER, as car enthusiasts, we stand a chance to last for quite a while. UNITED WE STAND, DEVIDED WE FALL. BASHERS WISE UP, WERE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. IF THE STREET RODDERS FAIL, EVERYTHING ELSE WILL FALL LIKE A HOUSE OF CARDS !!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm undecided about this. There are an awful lot of new cars being built in the neo 'traditional' style at the moment...and I like it. But that means potentially a lot of good floors being cut out for channelling etc and maybe some irrepairable bad body work being done to old iron.

    ON THE OTHER HAND

There are a lot of guys putting cars back on the road now that would never have made it on the road a few years back. One thing I really like about the 'traditional' style is that it is OK to do it yourself, or to drive it before it's finished or to never finish it. And while there are certainly style police within this 'traditional' group, pretty much anything goes. I think it's a bit of a rebirth of the early days (as I think they may have been) where young guys just get a car and do their best to build it the way they like it and in a way they can afford it.

That brings me back to my first point i.e. a lot of cars are being built that would otherwise NEVER have been built out of all sorts of shit that has never before been acceptable.

    end of tyrade

I'll never paint my cars. I dont care what anyone else thinks as time goes on. If Im 80 years old and barely able to walk I'll still slap on some goggles and drag myself into my 'A"D. Most people out there dont get traditional hot rods and probably never will. Regardless of how things change, I'll keep on driving and building cars that feel right to me.

I think people will still be roddin' and ridin' and carryin' on.
The style and times and cars may change but if we are all still here so will rods.
Hell back in the 70's people were callin' me and pops butchers for having chopped everything that would stand still for it form 32 Fords to Diamond T's to 70 Thunderbirds.
Just 'cause there are people out there who don't like what you do,have done, doesn't mean it ain't cool 'cause there are plenty of people out there who do like what you've done and will do and even if there aren't who gives a shit? The whole idea is personal satisfaction anyway.

I predict that Ebay hot rod parts prices will fall to reasonable levels due to a surge in supply (all the hoarders with excess cash that has been driving the market will die off and flood the market with their spare parts) The vendors that dropped billet parts like a hot potato for "traditional" parts will switch over to Civic/tuner parts because they sell.

Of course that all hinges on any new development (like Ebay in the last 10 years) that takes place in the next 10 years to change the course of events. Being able to see that when it happens is what makes people rich.:D

I could be wrong though. I once said there is no way a 32 Ford roadster is worth 10 grand....it wasn't when I said it.:D

I forsee porche red paint, ultra smooth body work, TPI's, brushed billet aluminum and tweed interiors.

Some fool with a mullet will call it old skool. And the rest will flock to build cars like they did "back in the day".

it's the Same as it Never Was...

But Striper said it well, about cars being put on the road that wouldn't have been before this so-called Traditionalism became all the rage. That may or may not be true...a small band of rebels always did their own thing aloof to the Public Eye, but now it's Hip to do so.

    10 years from now?

The irony will make you laugh.

"Hot rodding" HAS survived for, at least, over 70 years now...old guys die and pass their cars on, new guys get the itch to have something different and build new stuff, and, to make an in-your-face statement. "Tuners" don't make that statement! Hot rodding ain't going nowhere...it'll be here for YOUR kids to enjoy!!!

  21. Ask your kids.
I have a nephew that is turning twelve.
He has an early sixties Volvo that he (we) are building as a fifties style custom.
He is spending time at the shop this summer and will learn how to weld, "see" dents with his hand and a little sheet metal fabrication. Why?

He thinks it's cool that you can actually make this stuff yourself.

hot rods and customs, the kind we like, so called traditionals, will always be around. there will always be gearheads that want to keep them around for their historical value, and just because they are cool. there will also always be gearheads hotrodding anything that they can afford, or that they can get their hands on. hondas, trucks, boats, airplanes ,and weedeaters will be included. remember, in 1965 when we hotrodded my 57 chevy, it was only 8 years old, hardly traditional, like a 97 today._________if it feels good do it. if they say it will make you go blind, just do it til you need glasses.______dan

dude, i'm only 15 and i would totally flock to your model A and not the civic. screw all the other people, civics are slow and just a fad becuase of the show "pimp my ride" and movies like "the slow and the stupid." my plan is to show up to graduation in a black 49 Merc and do a huge burnout infront of everyone, and leave them in a fury of smoke.:D

anyways, their are still kids out there who would take the whitewalls over the huge stereos and wings.

28 here, the older I've gotten the older my tastes have gotten. I went from the early '90s rolling then a late model Chevy lowrider. To 2000 with a '58 Chevy street truck. To now, the '40 Chevy with a Odd Ball vintage motor I'm building.

I think we'll start seeing the late model lowrider crowd, tuner crowd, mustangs and camaros who are all in their teens to early twenties go through a similiar progression.

We are already seeing a surge of '70s vehicles rehitting the scene, there has been some resurgence of the van movement with SUV's.

And if I eat these words, DAMN it! But if 20-30 years from now we see guys rebuilding '89 Mustangs I wouldn't be too surprised. All of the pre '65 tin is getting rarer to find and restore. But on that note someone mentioned it earlier. Guys are starting to build on stuff now that, 10 years ago would have been crusher material as a starting point.

This brings me to part two:
With what is hitting the road these days who is going to be redoing this crap? Cars are barely made to make it to the end of a 60 month note. Trucks don't last 10 years like they should. The 'Rod lobby isn't exactly throwing the same kinda money at our legislaters that Detroit and Toyko are. So its no wonder the powers that be are trying to get old stuff off the road. You driving old stuff means you aren't wearing out one of their new cars, meaning they aren't making any money off you. Call it conspiracy theory here, but the other thread about ticketing at cruise nights, etc got me thinking. Is this the grass roots movement to get old tin off the streets.

Guess I'll still build it, but are we the next generation of gold chainers? Will they go from driveway, to trailer, to show? Just to avoid the public streets and ticketing, and hassles, etc.

    Pray to god not.........

And I bet it looks a lot better than bling blangin dubs on the stupid thing...

Lionheart said it best. The current day goldchainers are the people that spend money,or help influence the political set to keep the car hobby alive.SEMA is our friend, and if you check out their website,www.sema.org,you will see what they do to help our hobby. They are the only powerful body that will stick up for our hobby. We need to support them.

As far as what the state of the hobby will be in 10 years....good question. In my eyes,I believe that the hot rodding population right now probably averages 50-65 years old.Yes,alot of us here are younger than that, but go to any large show and the number of 30 year old and younger builders is still slim. Why is that?My belief is that due to the generation gap, younger kids try to make their own statement. The current car to have to be cool would be a sport compact for many.We can argue whether or not they are true hot rodders, but the fact remains that they drive a HUGE aftermarket industry.
If some of they grey beards had offered to mentor some of these kids we would have more young hot rodders building old cars, not relting on efi, turboed bling bling machines.

I am not talking out of my ass,as I have been employed in the speed parts aftermarket world for 20 years now and have seen the change. The rebirth of interest in the traditional hot rod scene is a welcomed one.I enjoy all sorts of automotive events.I can appreciate the work put into any car or truck. Some do not fit my tastes, but most have something you can draw from.

Will people build cars in 20 years with Boyd wheels and tweed interior?Sure they will.Maybe their neighbor had one,or dad even. That's ok though,at least there will still be old iron on the road.

    Who cares........??

Where it will be..........I do not. I had my 32 Ford Roadster back in the 70'S and will have it when I die........5 - 10 -20 years from now.

Most of us build cars to suit ourselves.....so trends can come and trends can go......my 32 was old school back before old school became popular again......I am going to build the 32 3W the way I want, not the way some magazine guy wants cars built now........molded, chopped , sitting on 22's and looking like a tupperware ad....

Most of the guys I work with ...think a old car is a 69 Camaro or 70 Mustang.... It's the same at a cruise night.........

I will just do it the way I have for years......

  30. Trend prediction: Mullet rods! Yep, modified muscle cars just like the 70s, bro. Cheap ass Cutlasses, Novas, Chevelles, Dusters and Torinos sporting the 'peanut pusher' look... vintage spring shackles, traction bars, air shocks, Keystones, Cragar SS, cherry bombs, Mickey Thompson 60s, Holley 850 double pumpers, etc... how about a vintage 8 track system blaring Zeppelin?

I am completely serious... the whole muscle car world is currently divided into two camps: the insane high-dollar collectors who fetishize "perfect numbers matching" museum piece rarities, and the high-dollar, high tech "G machine" modifiers who fuck up Camaros by trying to turn them into 'Pimp My Ride' tuners. Pretty much analogous to where the hot rod world was 10 years ago, and in serious need of a tradition-focused, low-tech, DIY shake up.
