I'd like to get some advice on what to swab on my truck to protect it from the rain but the body work ain't even close to being done, some of its done but not all and its all in primer, been just about stripped to bare metal and some bondo for the most part but its starting to show some rust thru the primer now with all this rain, I don't want to toss on something that I won't be able to paint over when the time comes for paint (maybe next year but definitley not this year)

so anyone got any tips what I can paint or seal it with to keep out the moisture from the bondo and steel with a coat of primer on?

its come as far as I am gonna bring it this year and I have to move onto getting my other truck ready for winter and stuff around the house done I didn't do last year:eek:

    thanks!

PPG's DPLF-40 thru-90 series primers/sealers are waterproof...spray it over sanded primer, use it as a sealer. We ran DPLF-50 (gray) on my bro's Caddy for over a year and never developed rust under the primer...DPLF primer/sealer will need to be sanded very well BEFORE applying new sealer or other primers and doing additional bodywork if it's been exposed to the elements for longer than a few weeks...it IS pricey tho...but it works and is flat, not shiney!

If the rust is coming thru the primer already it should be stripped back to bare metal for a good reliable job later on. Some primers are more dense than others as far as sealing, and the amount (thickness in coats) adds to the effectiveness of the sealing. Some primers are very good for moisture resistance, but most are NOT. A cheap way to seal after priming is to buy some mismatched 2 part paint and slop on a couple coats to seal the work in progress. I picked up 3 qts. of gray urethane last week for next to nothing for a cover coat. 2 part urethane will be a good foundation and can be sanded and recoated with usually no problem when you get back on the job. Whites have dense pigments and seal better and can be tinted easily with some black for gray, or whatever you want. If you take off the primer you have on the project, a good choice to start over with would be a mild etch primer (2 coats) followed by some good 2K (2 part) urethane primer/filler. The etch primer will neutralize the light film of rust, and the urethane primer will add to the fill and protection. Follow a system reccommended by the manufacturer.

To answer the question-Paint is the best sealer.

Good advice. Also, check to see if the PPG paint store in your area also sells PPGs OMNI brand.
You can get the OMNI MP170 Epoxy primer for half the price of DP but it only comes in grey.
Alot of the sandblasters in the area have switched to the OMNI MP170 and have had very good results for half the price.

thanks for the help so far

so I should stay away from stuff like tremclad paint?

I only have it primed with some cheapo spray can stuff from walmart at this time

if its covered with a tarp and outside will that just make it worse?

I hate to do anymore to it and have it rust again or soak up moisture in the body filler and have to start all over again, just no time to do it this year:(

one problem with the tarp is that it will hold the moisture in. no way to vent.

If it's cheapo spray can primer and you have more work to do still, cover it with some cheapo spraycan paint. You can get 20 cans at walmart for less than $20. You have to sand the whole thing down again later anyway...

I'm notoriously cheap....so take this for what it's worth. But I bought a qt of Rustoleum satin black enamel at Home-Cheapo for $7. Thinned it about 15% with acetone to get it to spray (the chassis was done with a brush using the same stuff). Hard finish and it seems to be holding up well after 6 mo's. What will I do when it's time to really paint?? I don't know... current plans are to apply another coat of Rustoleum.
