I saw this 40 Ford at the Goodguys show in Del Mar this year and can't get it outta my head. I have never seen a 40 with this stance...yeah I know, it's not in primer and doesn't have WWWs and the door handles are off some late model mullet-mobile...but I really like the stance and the roof line. I know that there has to be more chopped top 40's around...post some pics! How hard is the chop on this model?
Take a look at Rikster´s album: http://public.fotki.com/Rikster/11_..._i_like/ford_custom_cars/40_ford_custom_cars/
Goodness... I bet a top chop on a '40 is pretty tough. There are a lot of complex curves to contend with.
Guess you're right, Ryan. I was pretty unsure about it. I've had this pic for a real long time and it's so damn cool...
That creme with scallops car runs every year at the salt. Better than a buck and a half, after driving up from southern Cal....... 40 Fords can be chopped successfully, but based on the ones I have seen over the last 30 years or so, it isn't easy. For every chopped 40 coupe that looks "right," I have seen about half a dozen that look butchered.
There was a red one with flames that did the auction rounds about 15 years ago in the East Coast. Never got to photograph it, but it was the best chopped '40 I've ever seen.
There is a whole bunch on carnut.com. Mostly streetrod stuff but you can see a bunch of different body and trim modifications. a great resource to save. www.carnut.com/photo/list/ford/ford40.html
I wrote an article in Tex Smiths HotRodMechanix on chopping a 40 about 15? yrs ago....Its just hard in a sense that its hard to get the flow right.....Its really no worse than any other top chop. On a mild chop Id recommend maintaining the rear posts stock inclination....and on a deep one -slope her..........also the split rear gl***, could be gone -as far as [my]taste runs. BUT...... that drip rail must stay to look decent!
hey crew, i have pretty wierd tastes - that first black car looks nice. we talking about the chop or the car? nothing woring with the first and nothing some new wheels and tyres wouldnt fix on the latter. for me, i always think raked 40's look awkward chopped, but then look killer if they are nose high and tail dragging. Danny
Yes, it's a 38 deluxe. It belongs to Chuck Edwall of the San Diego Roadsters. It runs a 500 Cadillac. 150+ at Bonneville and El Mirage, mid 11's in the quarter and routinely driven on the street including back and forth to Bonneville every year. Last year I was somewhere in Utah, rolling about 85 mph in my coupe. The 327 was singing a sweet song with the 3.50 gears at that speed. Chuck p***ed me doing about 95 - 100 mph and that big Caddy sounded like thunder.
I don't have a pic but about 10 or 15 years ago I saw a primered chopped and dropped 40 at sedalia. It was dropped dead level and about 5 or 6" off the ground, and cool da bone. I think the roofline hit me about the shoulder. If I built a 40 it would have to be a copy of that one.
Heres a pic of ****** Mary. A 50s survivor I just did some work on. Was featured in a few mags back in the day. I'll go get some updated shots of it soon.....Shiny
