Hot Rods Stripping with a grinder

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Leadsled612, Feb 19, 2012.

  1. Spent a few more hours today with the 4 1/2" grinder stripping rust areas to clean white metal with flap discs.
A very time consuming effort...however much needed.

When I read this title I pictured a 7" angle grinder with a 1/4" thick grinding wheel! Thankfully it looks like you're using a flap disc! Looks good!

  4. Very cool. What kind of discs were you using in the grinder?

no flap disc! use a paint buster its easier on the metal, flap disk sands the metal while paint buster does just that busts paint off..

Thats how I like to strip to bare metal too. Nitrile gloves are a must too.

  8. Lowes has their "DeWalt" brand flap discs wich seem to hold up the best. I've tried local hardware stores and their off brands just don't hold up. They were too stiff and not as beafy.
The troubled areas I started with 36 GRIT --- 60 GRIT--- then 80/120 GRIT.
I didn't want to spend the $$$ to get her blasted...call me cheap, so I did it myself for about $55.00.

You did all that for $55.00 !?! I'm impressed!

  11. Skyrodder, these are awesome! I used them to cut the painted surfaces to the metal and then took care of the rust!

  13. I still have the roof and "A" pillars to do and so far the clock was 14hours. My guess is another 6 hours

  15. I'd love to have a car in bare metal form with perfect machined swirls in pattern. Would look kick ass!

just went through your album of over 1000 pictures! really nice job on the chop. i like how you did the side quarter windows, for me that rear curve can make or break the whole chop. can't wait to see it in paint. pick a color yet? good luck.

  18. thanks for the compliment Mike.

I used a twisted wire wheel(s). I did a whole truck with them. They don't remove metal. They do bust rust and take out seam sealer/bondo too.

YIKES ! Black is such a bitch - the car's gotta be more than perfect to pull it off . I'm sure I'll never have a black-worthy car , because I don't have the patience and I like to drive my stuff . Yours looks like it's well on it's way to being worthy though . Keep the updates coming !

When he said "stripping with a grinder" I expected to see a pic of his t-shirt wrapped around his angle grinder and several new cuts and abrasions... Definitely a better pic was shown, nice car! I agree about the black though, bodywork needs to be spot on and then some. Car seems to be in really good shape to start with though..

  23. I agree the body must be near perfect for black paint. I will leave that up to the body shop for the finer details. In addition I am flaming the merc from front to rear...this will break up the larger body areas of any inperfections.

Rapid strip is the way to go. Works very well. Your hands will be shaking like a old man at the end of the day but it's cheaper then blasting!

i also like to strip with aircraft stripper and the "da" but i like using the larger "hog" sander it has been the best for me.beside walnut shells

  26. Where can I get the Norton paint buster discs for my angle grinder?
    Thanks

the paint buster discs tend to clog with paint and primer in a few minutes and don't work so well after that. i'm stripping a '50 cadillac now and that's what's happening. some paint may be easier to strip with them. this stuff doesn't wrinkle with aircraft stripper either, just turns into a drooly goo. i guess it's going to be the drooly goo method, after spending $100 on a bunch of those pads.
