Is there any way to decode a VIN or body stamping to tell what this body was originally?

Does anyone have a good method to determine whether or not this is an original Special Coupe

For reasons unknown, Henry stopped production of the regular coupes for several months in 28/29 replacing them with the “special” version. There is no way to tell one by the VIN but the stamped in grooves for the moldings around the quarter windows are a dead gives away. IIRC, there are a couple other things that came with the package- rear mount spare and chrome loom for the headlights, maybe a different horn.

Definitely check out our social group, lots of good info there. The belt line moldings are hard to find but the ones that go around the quarter windows are even tougher since the beltline molding is also used on the Sport Coupe. We discuss some alternatives and the available repros at the Special Coupe Club.

They ain't for everyone but they are a pretty cool ride. Here's one of mine, a couple more at http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/album.php?albumid=5271
