235 chevy help

any 235 gurus on the hamb? Im getting ready to build one for a friend, The book wants me to use a "feel" method . removing or adding shims to the mains on the crank. It would be great if I had a clearance to go for with plastic gauge. Ken

 

.001"-.003" for new bearings, .001"-.0045" for used as per the shop manual:

what year is the engine? early '55 and older use shims on the mains, the later ones aren't supposed to need any...
