Step one is to stay away from the color yellow! You've heard of chick magnets? Well, yellow is an insect magnet!

I find the best time to paint bug free, is real early in the morning, while dew is still out(Before they have warmed up and are lethargic and dew on wings make for difficulties flying), and hopefully have a decently sealed area to paint in. I keep a tweezers around.

It seems overall when most bugs are least inactive is early am. If its a warm night and there is lights on inside the garage, forget about it. Still think a few are looking to get in and catch a paint buzz, no matter the time. Ever see the mess a big moth can make in a coat of clear, I unfortunately have. Thank God there is color sanding to take care of most of the less severe problems that can occur, but no chance with what that moth did. Bugs and dirt are also one reason I've been scared to try a candy job.

Didn't realize I responded to this thread earlier. I ended up buying a house in october 2010, and am sort of in the country, so not too bad for being crowded by neighbors. Have a two stall garage now, with 240 already in, and 200 amp service in ba*****t. So thats least better then what I had at the old place I was renting. Still think there was more room in my old little garage though, support pole in the worst place. Still haven't done much to set up garage for painting, nor have I painted anything in it yet. If I ever stumble upon a money tree, I do have just over an acre, so would have room for a nice garage in the future. But looks like stuff to do and fix and spend on the house would be enough to last me till the day I die.
