How strong are they? Limited slip possible? Problems to look for? I just got a truck with a banjo axle and no torque tube and know really nothing about them.
If its the one that came with your new 1/2ton project, the banjo is useful for converting an earlier banjo diff to a universal joint input. about the same strength as prior year (pre war) banjos. no LSD
If you're going to beat on it, get a 9-inch; it's not the weakest thing around, but as noted it's desirable for converting other rearends to open drive.
I want to run a banjo behind a flathead in a T. Someday. I'd do as suggested and pu a 9" in the truck. Again, someday.....
If it is the one with rear axle to drum shear pins carry a few spares if you keep it and I would even check the ones in it now.
I've had three of them apart over the years and all three were 4.11 but I think there may have been a 3.78 and a 4.27 option .....don't have my references available now so can't verify that....fats
i have a 42-47 open drive banjo center with 37-41 axles/tubes in my "A" pickup. the open center came with a stock ford 3:54 ring and pinion.
