Removing flash chrome, with chemicals

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by divco13, Feb 27, 2012.

  1. I have a set of West Coast Jr Mirrors.
The have a few rust pits thru the flash chrome finish. I do not want to blast them. Will Metal Prep dissolve the cheap chrome ?
I am going to ech primer them, after striping. I'll use some shade of Sem Paint

I know there are some household cleaners that will remove the chrome, but i don't know which ones exactly.

Muriatic acid solution is available in small quan***ies at a hardware store and will do it and remove any rust, but thorough neutralization must be done afterwards (soak in weak bleach solution, rinse off, for example.)

Our chrome strip is used metal cleaner, mostly sodium hydroxide, which is nasty stuff, but won't take off chrome without electrolysis; at least in our particular solution.

A thorough hand sanding will do fine as well. Even with a chemical strip, its good practice to scuff the remaining nickel layer before coating.
