Can you use just any old rubber hose on a fuel filler neck, or is fuel hose a special compound? Probably a stupid question, but the filler neck in my daily took a shit on me this past week and, go figure, nobody, even the dealer, has the replacement neck, which is about a 3 foot long metal piece. Thanks.
Yes,it has to be fuel neck rubber hose. Gates makes it. Most larger parts stores will have it. sparky
Don't think so... I went to a truck dealership and they have the reg flex hose for gas filler,, I bought two pieces and used a piece of x=haust tube'n as a splice Gas would raise hell with rubber hose.. Pontaic Slim
Many moons ago i thought the same thing any hose should work .I mean not much of the actual hose between the 2 metal parts was exposed , so no biggie...WRONG ... Make sure you have fuel rated hose .It did not take long to where i was filling up and gas was spilling out .But hey when yer 17 , and money is tight you will use anything , right ? LOL .
I have used both. Actual Gas filler hose with is wire reinforced and stiff as hell. But years ago I relocated the full filler on my old chevy Van. (I wish I stll had it, but it died of the salt inflicted CANCER). The radiator hose worked alright from what my remaining brain cells tell me. I just remember it did leak. But that was caused by a wayward drill bit. I hate when that happens. P.S. It was great meeting you at the Road Agents Show on Saturday.
I went the Super-cheapo way out and just bought some of that gas tank repair putty. I've used it before with success, and from what I can see, the holes are up near the top of the filler neck, so I cleaned it up with a brass bristled brush (no sparky!) and plugged it with this putty stuff. I figure, if it works in the bottom of a fuel tank with the weight of the fuel sitting on it and being sloshed around, it shouldn't have any problems at the top of the fuel filler neck. We'll see! TooTall, it was great meeting you, also. With any luck, I'll be a CT HAMBer soon!
It's essentially an elbow that screws into the side of the fuel filler neck and sticks up through the light assembly.
Fuel proof hose is expensive. I was going to buy a 3' piece to use and keep the rest for stock until I priced it. I ended up getting the short pieces that the early Ford suppliers sell. It's the right stuff. Measure your neck to get the correct size and check with any of the old car parts suppliers. They won't list the size because they sell it for a specific application but a phone call might get you the information.
The local O'rielly's/Kragen in my town stocks Gates fuel proof gas hose and sell it by the foot. It's been a year since I bought a foot of it. I want to say it was about $15 per foor for 2.25" dia.
