Stuck engines

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Al T, Jun 28, 2005.

  1. Was wondering what methods you guys have had success with on stuck engines. The engine is sitting on an engine stand and won't be worked on for a while but it is stuck from sitting. I'd like to try to break it loose to reduce some problems down the road. Its had diesel in the cylinders for the last few months. What is the best way to try break it loose when it's sitting on an engine stand?

Are there better products than diesel for this........ I've seen comments about Marvel Mystery oil (not usre if the name is right).

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Kroil. The worlds best penitrating lubricant.

MMO and automatic ****** fluid both work alright too, it you have lots of time on your hands.

Let it sit a good long time, then use a breaker bar on the crank bolt and see if you can turn it. If you can, slowly work it back and forth, going a little farther each time until it spins free.

PB Blaster in the plugholes, magnetic so it stays well.

  4. My Valiant had been sitting for 15+ years before Yorgatron & his brother found it, poured MMO down the plug holes & it worked wonders....

Want a super cheap fix that worked on our seized 348? Pour a litre (quarter galon for use yanks!) of coke in it every two weeks. Ever see what coke will do to a penny if left in it overnight? Cheap and it works!

  6. what did you guys use to "Convince" it to move?

Breaker bar on the bolts of the crank flange or????

If it is in the car and a stick...put it in gear and drag it around until it breaks loose...

  9. I've had good luck w/ WD40 and oil shot into the cylinder and let it sit for a week, adding a little every couple days.

  10. "NIX" on the breaker bar on the crank bolt. It'll break the ****ing bolt and open goes Pandora's box!!!!!!! Use a flywheel turner, or pull the pan and see if there are balance holes in the crank that a 1/2 drive extension will fit in with the fat end. DON'T turn the balancer bolt with a breaker bar. You might make a steel plate that bolts on where the lower pulley goes on the balancer and weld a LARGE nut to it and breaker bar THAT.

A Concoction Of Brake Fluid, Coke (cola) And Gasoline Works Pretty Damn Good With About A Weeks Worth Of Soaking.

  12. Diesel fuel. works on everything. ( great for minor cuts too)

fill her up... and let er sit... then use the breaker bar on the crank. If you do break the nut.. you went too far. LOL. Took about a week working it a little every day... but I actually got that motor running. I love the coke idea.... why didnt I think of that? Im going to try it on a Yamaha 400 I dug out of a junkpile today!

We tried that with Mel's parts truck hoping that A) the motor would break loose, B) the trans would explode, C) THe rear end would snap. We went around the block a bunch of times popping the clutch and nothing happened. THe wheels would lock up and thats about it. It was really dissapointing....

  19. If you're going to rebuild it anyways, soak it with whatever you prefer; if it won't move after a week or so pop the heads off and use a length of fresh 2x4 or other wood - put it in each bore and whack the other end with a hammer a couple times.

Worked for me, then I bored the block in question .030 anyways. Probably could have gotten away with .010 though. The motor had sat probably 20 years by then, the car had 1977 stickers and I thought was missing the master cylinder, until I found two in the trunk, explaining why it was parked.

Usually it's just a bit of rust around the rings that sticks them, so if you free it up and take it right apart you're not likely to damage anything.

Try this-If the motor is in a stand flip it upside down and remove the pan.Now go find some dry ice and chip it up real good and dump the chips into the pistons. If your lucky the pistons will slightly shrink from the extreme cold and you might be able to spin the crank.Good last resort before hammering!

Coca Cola works wonders on all sorts of things. It will break a stuck engine loose. Yet I still drink several cans of it a day.

I used a mixture of half Marvel Mystery Oil and half WD-40 on my Flathead. It took a while but eventually, on a stand, I could turn it over with a big screwdriver in the flywheel teeth.

Glad YOU guys are having such great luck...

I've got one that took water down 2-cyls.
    Tried PB ---Nope
Left it sit for six months with the heads off and MMO in cyls.- Nope
All but one cyl. leaked down and no amount of 2x4 and sledge will do it.
Gonna hafta disconnect the rod and hope the crank moves so I can bash
    that piston out.

i've stayed out of this one as long as i could. i figured that anything i could say would be said before i could get it typed in. BUT...

    1. soak the entire engine (55 gal drum?) in
    a. water, or
    b. water/mol***es mix

    2. if the heads are still on make an adapter to squirt grease into a cylinder. do this by taking an old spark plug; cut off the end where the ceramic is; weld a female pipe fitting to it that a grease zerk will screw into. put it into a plug hole and use a grease gun to fill the cylinder and then force the piston down.

    more info here

    and here

30/70 dilution of phosphoric acid to water. Soak for a day (or 2 if you feel lucky), then MMO. I know a guy that takes a spark plug out cores it, rethreads the base with a NPT nozzle, and screws it into the cylinder. Then lets air pressure work for him. It'll blow loose particles from around the piston, and eventually will turn the crank. Just an idea.

I have had good luck with ATF (type F, no reason, just seems to be what I have)
Or, when it is REAL stuck, I enjoy the, pull the head and use a BFSH.
