I've a '53 DeSoto over here, getting new brakes, cleaned/coated tank and a general going over to get it ready for the road. I want (and the owner wants) to convert to 12 volt, but I am a little aprehensive about the fluid drive controls. Does anyone know if these can handle 12 volts, or should I resist these controls down?? Next, because some ***** didn't know how to drive this car (I don't know who, or I'd box 'is ears), it needs a clutch. Other than following the Motor manual, are there any tricks/pitfalls to look out for on this job?? I AM expecting the trans to weigh a bit more than an ******, bit less than a D9 Cat, so that's handled. Thanks, Cosmo
Im not sure about the fluid drives, do they use solenoid type shift activators. I installed an electronic overdrive on my 55 plymouth then converted it to 12 volts and it didnt hurt anything. In fact it made the shift alot less lazy. I dont think its a big deal because higher voltage on a solenoid is like a higher voltage on a motor, it just makes it move alot quicker. The amps will actually be lower so i dont think youll have anything to worry about.
