Hi to all, long time reader first time posta, Im wondering if anyone can help me?? Can a 55 Olds 324/hydramatic combo fit in a 56 Olds 98 coupe without modifying anything? Are the tailshafts the same? I know the transmission mounts are different but will they still fit in the 56?? Also will a 56 hydro or jetaway fit on a 55 324 Olds?? Any light on this will stop giving me nightmares
Using everything from the 55 including the trans crossmember it should bolt it in and you can use the jetaway from the 56 if you so desire but if it was me I would use the 55 hydro, since the 56 came with the jetaway you will need to use the 55 column since the shift pattern is different.
Depends. The '56 88 used the Hydra-Matic, same as the '55, so it would bolt right in. The '56 Super 88 and 98 used the new Jetaway. I had a '56 88, and it was pretty fast. Turned 15.9 in the quarter, which was not too bad in 1959.
Ok thanks for the info.. Im going to use the 55 324 and hydro.. Apart from the different shift pattern on the column, would the 56 98 tailshaft fit the 55 hydro?? I know i can use the jetaway with the 55 324 as it has the same bolt pattern on the crankshaft flange and the rear of the engine block..
Owen, Nice to see you return to hamb I liked reading your old tales from GM, and whatever Olds stuff you write about.
Nope, the Jetaway needs a different bushing in the crank, and the crank itself is different right there.
Here's a question, which ****** is better? The Jetaway is designed for smoother shifting but was said to be less efficient. Hydramatics were an older design but were used in tanks and trucks, too. Fuel prices are going crazy; maybe rougher shifting is a worthwhile tradeoff for acceleration and better mileage?
