We've got a Factory Five Racing Daytona Coupe that was built by a local shop about 7 years ago. The shop went out of business about that same time. The car was never ***led. It does have a VIN and we do have all of the receipts and build do***entation. In Indiana, ***ling a car has always been very easy if you have a VIN and bill of sale. You just have the state police come inspect the car and take that affidavit to the BMV, apply for a ***le, and you are good to go. The insurance company is saying that the car needs to be ***LED as a 1965 or it will be subject to whatever year emissions and crash testing. I don't believe that is correct. I have receipts but nothing that says "Bill of Sale" and the VIN does not have a year ***ociated with it so the police officer basically told me to "make up whatever year" we want it to be, which I also think is not right. Suggestions? It's time to put this car on the road...
Dude, save yourself ten million headaches and ***le it as a 65 if you can. Otherwise you'll always jump through the emission hoops/never be able to sell it to someone in california/etc... That thing looks fun as ****.
It's got a five speed and a Roush Racing 347. It's got a couple of miles on it but we don't really know just HOW fun yet until we can insure it and put it on the street.
If the cop said make it whatever year you want make it a 65. Your not trying to p*** it off as an original so I see no problem with it.
Only a total of six coupes were made, They were all 1965 model year. So it makes sense to ***le it as a 1965. In California if the kit car replicates the original by more than 80%, and one of the first 500 for the year to be registered under SB100, and the CHP referee station makes that decision, it will be ***led as a 1965 "Special Construction". No reference to AC Cobra. Each state seems to do it differently.
I looked at a factory five roadster last fall. It was built in NJ and ***led/registered here. It had 1965 on the registration. I don't remember if it said Ford or AC or FactoryFive as the make? I thought it odd that it would be called a 1965 as it clearly is a replica. so I guess that's the way to go. 1965 all the way. BTW, I sat in it and made motor noises, but my T has more room and is more comfortable.
I was thinking that Boyd Coddington got in trouble with something along the lines of ***ling cars as original years? Or was he buying ***les and Vins and putting them on fibergl*** kit cars? I just wanna make sure that whatever we do is legal. I'd LOVE to see it ***led as a 1965
Wisconsin has a "Replica Vehicle" category, where you can ***le a kit or home built as the year of what it resembles, regardless of when it was actually built. Indiana has a "custom built" category that covers kits, but I didn't see anything about year of manufacture rules. If the cop said ***le it as a '65, I'd just go ahead and do that.
factory five provides an MSO, 'manufacturer statement of origin' with every kit they sell. that is what you use to ***le the car. give them a call, explain how you came to own the vehicle and ask if they will send you a copy. i'm not sure that they are allowed to issue a duplicate MSO, so you might be **** out of luck.
If you have all the reciepts from the build you shouldn't need a bill of sale. Just tell them you built it, its a replica of a 65 and ***le it. About all you'll have to do is pay tax on the amount of the reciepts, get the cop to verify the car and you are good to go.The Fla. DMV has the form you need for the cop to sign upon inspection.
the number that factory five puts on the car is not a vin. the state will issue you a vin that you have to apply to the car.
This is the best reply. It originally came with an MSO and that would, or should, ease getting do***entation with your State. That MSO is worth looking for a**** the papers or from the remnants of the prior owner. Ray
Without a SB100 number rereg it will never be legal in California and they don't like people importing finished kit cars.
+1. They also are pretty good at keeping records of every kit they sell. If you aren't already on one there are two Factory five forums that I know of that you can probably get accurate info on. http://www.ffcars.com/ their site and link to the forum http://www.thefactoryfiveforum.com/ Read this one: http://www.ffcars.com/forums/17-factory-five-roadsters/271212-registration-indiana.html The best thing is still to straight to the dmv office as high up the food chain as you can get and start there. Talking to the local know it alls at cruise night usually isn't too productive in the long run.
I do have the Certificate of Origin and all applicable paperwork for every single item along the way. We got all applicable paperwork except a ***le. We have someone interested in buying it and is gun shy because of the lack of ***le. If we ***le it, we pay the taxes on it and then he turns around and pays the taxes again two days later. We were trying to avoid that. Obviously whether we sell it or not, we need to ***le it. I've been dying to get that thing out on the road or to Putnam Park and play a little bit.
