My frame was rotted at the intersection of where the frame rails meet the rear portion of the central crossmember. There is some minimal pitting in some small areas on the rails, but no through and through cancer. If I box the frame and build a new 2x4 rear kick up can I still use the rails with a SBF?
You do not need to box the rails. Just cut out the pitied and rusty areas and weld in new pieces of steel. I just finished doing this to my ch***is. I used 11 gauge metal and had some u channel made to go inside the frame rails. I am running a SBC in my SD. Here are some photos. Lynn
Not as bad as your photos but the top rail was rusted about 12 inches where the body mount was located. I cut out the pieces and made new ones. I have finished the repair and it came out nice. I added the inner channels for additional strength as I did not want to box the rails. Yours is a much bigger project but doable. Lynn
Looks sweet. I dig the concept. I am going to build a new rear kick up and graft it on. Do I need to worry about this amount of pitting? If I add the boxing plate do you consider it safe? I don't want anyone getting hurt so I'd rather be safe. Thoughts? Thanks for your input Lynn.
Nice job on that..... My 41 was really bad....but i was able to find another frame. I'll keep this in mind.....Thanks for sharing.... 4TTRUK
