I have painted blocks with automotive paint. Thy hold up well. Use Dp as a sealer.

'60's stuff. deburr block, clean good enough to eat off of, use automotive primer & paint with hardener. exhaust port areas and intake manifold exhaust crossover areas may discolor from heat.

Some Hambers told me you could buy rattle can metalflake at Home Depot and when i went I couldn't find it, so I asked the guy at the counter and he's like "we've got lots of metallic paint" I tried explaning what metalflake was and he was looking at me like I was wearing a tie died tee shirt and a rainbow bandana.

I painted my block in my 54 Plymouth. Copper w/ orange flake. It came out nice...it doesnt seem to discolor...which I would guess a darker shade..but of course its dark in the engine bay too....with all of the***** bolted to the block...its tough to see anything except the front.

I cleanded the block w/ oven cleaner and large quantities of simple green to de-grease. Then shot it with etching primer, ChromaBase copper base coat, 2 coats of Norstar clear w/ lots of medium orange flake, and 2-3 coats of normal clear. it came out pretty nice...for an engine block.... I also shot the waterpump separate from the motor. Im happy...im sure it wont stay permanent...but long enough until the car sells Im sure.

    Hope this helps.

donnie i was going to flake the 49's block. I mixed the paint and all but ran out of time..

here's what I was going to use.. its PPG so it might not help you..

DCC Concept Acrylic Urethane.. Candy red some HOC mini and LG flake, peals and whatnot..
    DCC is 2:1:1 (2 DCC:1Thinner:1Hardener)
Mix it 2:1 no Hardner.. sounds weird huh.. but the hardner will yellow from the heat of the block.
I shot a few test panel with it.. a chrome air clearner and a TH350 housing... both look fine to this day.. oh, and part of my engine stand thats been in the sun for 3 years now..
Take it for what its worth.. this is what a reliable paint shop recommended..

    ok then GFY.

  14. poly flake or mylar is usually rated to 1600 degree's and shouldnt discolor except maybe at the exhaust flanges mylar was invented by NASA for the moon shoots and is the ingrediant in glitter or our name for it flake
