This one was labeled Penny's Foremost. Probably made by dixco?

And sold by JC Penny, I'd guess.

  7. I have the same tach, only 6 grand, but three wire, same face and same tag on back (cut red wire for 6 cyl) but the brand name is balkamp on the face.... I think they were Dixco produced.

Penneys sold all kinds of speed parts, I've got a pair of Foremost/Penneys slicks in my garage.

Anybody who was around at that time remembers the Penny ads. All the stuff was made by various well known companies like Dixco or M/T, and rebadged as Penny/Foremost or JC Penny. Bet those slicks were made by M/T. Trying to remember whose wheels they re-badged and sold. I'm thinking Fenton, but that could be wrong.

Those were the days. You could buy cars from Sears, Motorcycles from Montgomery Ward, and hot rod parts from JC Penny. And speed part houses used to advertise on local TV. Fun stuff...

  14. Pennys sold US wheels in the later '60s as I recall. I don't know when that ad was from but fentons could have been a possibiltiy. Penny's also sold that red white and blue garlits tach for a while in the '70s I believe, at least here in KC they did.

  15. The aluminum slot with countersunk lugs ... probably appliance.

Sears as well, like all major marketeers were staking claim in the automotive aftermarket share.
Prior to marketing the baby boomers in the mid 60's and 70's, these ads would be filled with studded snow tires, jumper cables and fuel saving gadgets for pap's Nash Rambler.

Muttley; where in the h-l do you come up with these ? ? You never cease to amaze me ! ! Tom S. in Tn.

Headman's in this case sold with the M/T brand name.

I could be wrong, but weren't all those brands marketed by one distribution company to the stores?
I know this is a tangent, but anyone comment on W.R. Grace and what they did to racing sanctioning organizations?

Yep! Had a Wards Reverside motorcycle I bought from their bargain store. It was a Benelli 250, and had it back in the shop within 30 days after uying it. Warranty fortunately, but I sold it a few years later; it was ****.

  19. Hell even harley davidson marketed benellis when they were owned by the bowling ball company.

I built a sweet 301 using my Sears credit card. Cam Kit (it was Crower), intake (E/brock), valves (TRW), full rebuild set including pistons and bearings (TRW). They even had a full array of dress-up items. I had most accessories (headers, carb, Vette v/covers) hangin' on the wall. Now you're lucky if they have anything of any kind in stock. I bought a nice Craftsman® Midi-lathe the other day (used once, still in box). I went to get a stand from Sears® specifically listed for that lathe...none here....none anywhere near here...none in Phoenix, Denver, LA, SF, Portland, Seattle, Boise...blah blah blah...yaddah yaddah yaddah. Yet, there it is, prominently advertised, inviting me to do a "store pickup", however there were NO stores at which I could pick it up...and I have a stinking airplane I could go get it in. Sorry..got a bit off track there. Yes, the good old days...every town had a speed shop of some sort, and most of them had somebody you knew or went to school with.

The ad? I posted it last year in another thread asking about Penneys stuff. I bought the tires at the Turlock swap meet a couple of years ago. They are in great shape and as soft as the day they were made, I payed $60 for the pair. The guy told me if he didnt sell them that weekend he was going to mount them to his Chevelle and smoke them until they popped.
