Got a quote for 4 16 inch ford wheels $340 blasted and coated. High? low? input?

Anyone have pictures of Les Schwab powder coating?

    Edit:

I should have been more clear. The $340 is from a "reputable" shop.....Kinda getting screwed i think.

Les schwab does powder coating as well for $25 bucks a wheel. The send it via their own trucks to headquarters in Oregon to be done. I am curious if this is up to par.....even though I used to work there I have never seen it done as it is not advertised.

  2. Sounds pricey. I paid $40/wheel blasted and coated. Nice job, nowhere near Seattle.

We're in the $40.00 range here in East Tennessee for blasting and coating.

"Screwed in Seattle" sounds cool though.

    Shop around.

I pay $35 for the powder coating and $15 for the sand blasting so $200 would be what I would pay for 4 wheels that a reputable coater that handles stuff for NASCAR.

I haven't seen your wheels but I would bet that the tire store is farming them
out and you are paying extra because of that ..Look around I bet you can find
a coating shop that will do it for alot less than $ 340 ..

I recently paid $40 per wheel + $56 in powder for a guy to screw up 4 of my 16" wide five wheels. Got 'em back and they look like ****. There are a lot of little tight corners in an old Ford wide five wheel and I learned the hard way about the difficulties of powdercoating in tight corners. (Do a search on 'faraday cage effect'.) Many of the crevices where the hoop meets the wheel have a little fine line where it didn't even get coated...still just bare metal.

The 2 other places I got quotes wanted $100 per wheel.

In hindsight, there is probably a reason he was so cheap compared to the other guys. I guess the moral of this little story is do your homework on their method, ask to see examples of their work, and cheaper is not always better.

Really turned me off to powdercoating...paint is cheap.

Most of the time you get what you paid for in this area. In our neck of the woods it's $50. a wheel with the blasting for a total of $200. I did five wheel deal with the powder coat shop and work a deal for $40. ea with blasting.:D

Our guy charges about $ 35 a wheel, and that includes sandblasting. I can't paint stuff for what he charges and his work is nice.

i do blasting and i get $ 25 a wheel. good and clean looks like gray primer. front-back and middle. my 2 cents.

  14. $50 per wheel including blasting, cleaning, and the powder seems to be the norm for a good job in most areas. Plus or minus 10% would be $45-$55 per wheel for the whole job.

That said, new guys/new shops starting out will sometimes do a smokin good job to get his name out for as low as $25 per wheel, again for everything soup-to-nuts. Builds up his clientel and gets some new/bigger equipment and brings the price back to normal as not to be a gouger. This seems to be typical Ive found as have been using Powdercoating for some time now in several states. Tough as nails done correctly which can be a blessing or a curse. Best of luck on the wheels, TR

I powder coat out of my shop. I get $200 for 4 including blasting.

  17. I own a powder coat shop, man those guy's are giving that away at that price. We do rims all the time 16" $75 a rim, 18"-20" $100 not including blasting and we do a ton of rims! I'm in ND and only have 2 other compe***ors in town! Customers never complain about price!

  18. This was covered a couple months ago but I used Les Schwab at Southcenter less than a year ago with great results. I think they sent them to a shop in Renton or Kent. A friend that recommended them used the store on 1st Ave South in Seattle for his R** rod wires. Mine were new raw steel for $25 @. Turn over was 10 days

I paid $130.00 for 2 16 inch wheels powder coat only i had GB them before, i thought it was high but didnt ask before hand thought he was going to treat me right i did him.. I guess it depends on how bad the blasting was, All ik is a buisness is there to make money if they can do alot of volume and p*** a discount on great, if they charge actual time and cost etc for product it is what it is i guess.

Les Schwab is your best bet around here. They do a pretty decent job from what I've seen and the cost is right on par.

I also have my own powder business and depending on the condition of the wheels would be in the $50-$75 per wheel. On old rusty parts ive got to where I price the part based on actual time needed. Old rusty parts can take alot of cabinet time

I had a set of mopar rally wheels done by Les Schwab in silver and they came back looking great. They only have your basic colors but for the price they did an awesome job and got them back to me in one week when they said it would take 2. I think they ran me $43 a wheel at the time.

I think I know who you talked to (big shop off 4th in Georgetown) I am in there about 2 times a week for work, am friends with a few of the guys down there and have had parts done by them. They do an awesome job but they aren't real big on doing wheels because of all the time/labor (sand blasting) involved. Unless you want a custom color I would go to Les Schwab for wheels.

This is the only pic of the wheels I have (sent them to Idaho). Never cleaned up the rings or caps.

I would say do the math, time plus materials. I used to do some blasting with a friend. Diesel air compressor, 2 guys, and sand, if we had to do just your 4 wheels today. from start to finish on the blasting would take an hour to hour and a half. That is get the compressor out and running hook up lines, fill the hopper, ect to clean up. So 2 x $45.00/hr for guys, (at shop rates), 2-4 bags sand at $8.00/bag, 1-2 gallons fuel/ hr. That is for the blasting. ( it would take less time if we had a day of blasting scheduled) Now the wheels need to be cleaned of sand and preped before coating, ie. grinding the pits ect. A good powder coat dosen't usually go directly over sand blast, wheels may be one of the few exceptions. Now heat that oven to a few hundred degrees, spray the powder, remove from oven and watch them cool. wasted the better part of the day. That is without paying the electric bill for the lights or the cost of powder. When you think of it $300 seems fair.

I have seen a couple of sets of wheels done at Les Schwab. One set of 15" Chevrolet wheels done in white and a set of 21" Model T wire wheels done in black. Both sets old and rusty now look NEW. Nice job on both sets. They run so many truck wheels through the powder coat shops they get unreal prices! I was quoted $25 each for my 22.5 truck wheels. I can not buy the paint for that price!

    Good luck...

Not meaning to hijack the post,or attack you, but it sounds like you dont have a very efficient operation.I don't think I would want to deal with someone who"wasted the better part of the day" on my wheels. It's not like you are doing a favor for the customer.

  29. Sounds high to me. $200 would do it around here. Less if you were a regular.
