Uh-oh. So I'm in the middle of putting this clean 200-6, from a 65 Mustang into a 62 Econoline. I have the two motors out next to each other when I realize that the back of the block is completely different! I cursed Henry, and Edsel and Henry II and the whole rest of the Ford family for about an hour. So now it looks like I need some more parts, to whit: 1) The smaller bellhousing from a 65 Mustang, that will bolt to the van's tranny. 2) The smaller flywheel that will line up with the new starter mounting location. 3) Several cold beers. The smaller bellhousing block will slip into the doghouse much easier than the larger one, so I go that going for me. Anyone know the most likely doner vehicle I can snag these parts off of? Or better yet, anyone have them near Los Angeles? Woody
The little 6 cylinder engines were used for a long time, you'll find them in Fairmonts and Granadas and Mavericks into the mid 80s. But you still need to curse at Ford for another hour or two....
There are two bellhousing patterns, I think the late one started midyear 64. I don't think the early trans can be bolted up behind the late motor.I have a 62 170 in my Ranchero, and I just bought a 68 3 speed to put behind it. The trans to bell bolt pattern is different, and the front bearing retainer is much larger than the early one. The early trans uses a 15/16 10 spline clutch disc, the late one is a 1 1/16 10 spline. There are 2 diferent 3 speeds, one is full synchro and the other isnt. The trans I got is from a 68, and it definitely won't bolt up. You probably need a complete setup, bellhousing to tailshaft.....
Hmmm, that doesn't sound promising. This is why people put small block chevys in everything. I think I will lay under the van staring at it until I can make it fit with the power of my mind.
Did I mention the starter is in a different location too? Now it is becoming apparent to me that in fact the motor int he Van right now is what is wrong, not the motor I just put in it. Looks like at some point a late model 200-6 was swapped in with the V-8 bellhousing, and the starter below, next to the oil pan. I wouldn't be bitching, but I was trying to set a personal best time for engine swap, and now I'm screwed. Does anyone know if a 200-6 Mustang bell housing will bolt up to a 3 speed toploader?
if it's a Ford straight 6 with the V8 type bellhousing, maybe it's the big motor, the 240/300 type. sure would help if you could cough up a picture.
I wish I could come up with a picture, but my camera phone isn't working with the computer right now, and its dark out there anyway. After spending a few hour online here, I have pretty much determined that its a 1980ish 200 and not the early one that should be in there. Or maybe a 250. Either way, its got the V-8 bellhousing. That's why it won't work. Look's like I need to find just about any early six bellhousing to go with the new/older motor. This is what happens when you don't do your reaserch before hand.
Its probably either a 250, or most likely a "LM200" (low mount 200) which would be an early 80s engine. The 6 with the low starter mount is not very common, you'll probably have a helluva time finding a matching setup.
I'm begining to realize that. Luckily, that was the motor that I took out. I just need to figure out what the transmission is, and what bellhousing will bolt to it. I think it's the original 3 speed that came in the van, so now I just need a van/mustang bellhousing or the original vintage. Thanks for letting me vent, I'll post a picture of the van when I get one. It's cool, lowered, two tone, torque thrusts, just needs a new motor.
Take a look at the trans, and give some details. Is it a topload with a 4 bolt cover? if so, it's a 2.77. If its a topload with a 9 bolt cover, its a 3.03. This IS a 3 speed, right? After we figure out which trans it is, we'll know what you need. I have quite a few Falcon transmisions and clutch setups, I may be able to help, if I know what you need.
Cool. It's a 9 bolt toploader. I saw another Econoline in the junk yard a week or so ago. I suspect I can just get a bellhousing and flywheel there. Let me know what you have It'll save me a nother weekend on my back, and let me know if you want the stuff I just took off, I have no use for it. Woody
OK, so you have a 3.03 transmission, and you want to match it up to a 65 block....Fortunately for you, the bellhousing and clutch you need is probably the most common one. Look for one in 6 cylinder mustangs and falcons, 64-??? Maybe even early 70s mavericks. I'll do some digging today, but I think most of my stuff is for the early 4 bolt bellhousing, pre 64....
