What'd you learn to drive in?

My Father's 59 anglia small block chevy 4 speed

 

We had field cars.
49 Chrysler
55 Ford
54 Buick
57 Olds
57 Pontiac
57 Chevy

 

Mom's house-- Ford Pinto wagon (one of the exploding ones). Learned the gas/clutch ratio was about 50/50... then back at dad's house, got to back the Jag XKE out of the garage. Turns out the Jag didn't need as much gas as the Pinto. Oops. Didn't hit anything, but probably did give dad a mild heart attack.

 

I learned how to drive in my big brothers '55 Chevy, 6cyl. three speed (floor conversion) and 4doors. Normal Norman

 

i first "legally" drove my 46 fleetline more door to high school in the 60's.. "yes it had pot leaves, peace signs, and flowers painted all over it"....but i guess i really learned to drive in the 41? international yard truck of my dads from the time i was a kid and could barely reach the pedals in the late 50's, we owned a salvage yard so i had work to get done

Funny enough my Son has now adopted the one I fixed up a couple of years ago. He's still a learner at the moment.

I learned in Dad's friggen' '57 Cadillac, but at least it had that cool 365 Caddy engine. Actually, a pretty nice ol' boat at the time. DD

 

My Drivers' Ed car was a 1967 Plymouth Valiant but I didn't drive that one much . The Family car was a 1956 Plymouth station wagon with a [IIRC] Red Ram V8 . That car scared me . A mechanic got drunk and took it for a joy-ride and was clocked at over 160 [The Arkansas State Trooper car couldn't go any faster] coming back across the Old Memphis Bridge running on 7 cylinders . I once had to floor it in Reverse to get out the way of 2 cars racing on a 2 lane road over a hill at me and my mom . It burned all the rubber , down to the cords , on the 1 day old rear tires . After all that my father still made me take my 1st road test in it even though I had a nice slow Falcon I had picked in which to learn ; I failed because I was nervous . I used the Falcon the next time and passed with flying colors .

 

In '89 my ol man took me for a ride in his '63 Catalina. He stopped about a couple of miles down a dirt road and said "have at it". 3 on the tree, 389 still have a soft spot for those old Pontiacs and column shifts.

First learned on my grandfathers 52 Ferguson 2085 (I still have it), then in his 63 International pickup (wish I had it).

 

1949 Willys pickup - four wheel drive. Also learned how to pull the starter and unstick the bendix on a regular basis.

 

My brother and I stole grandpas 50 GMC , got caught , took a beatin , it was so worth it!!

 

My Dad gave me a 47 Pontiac more-door,it was brindle -shit brown. I hated it. Sold it and bought a 49 Olds fastback shortly thereafter.

 

I learned how to drive in my parents 1966 Plymouth Fury 383 4-speed.

 

Dad stuck me in his 49 kb 2 with granny non synchro 4 spd., and said have at it. I was 11 in 54,,,, does that make me old???
Think he rued that day.

 

Ford 8N

 

1934 (I think) Ford Bread truck turned farm truck when I was 15 in 1956.
It was a neighbor farmer's truck who, as it turned out, later became my grandfather-in-law.
His hired man ran it into a maple tree about a year later.
Believe it or not, that Maple Tree is still standing and my Wife's cousin (who makes maple syrup) "tapped" it for this year's run just yesterday.
If you want to count tractors, my Dad's '41 Allis-Chalmers "B" since I was about 12 or so.

1950 something A-40 Mack, sitting on my Dad's lap, I steered and shifted, he clutched. I think I was 8 or 9. Also an 8N tractor that I drove myself.
At 11 or 12 I got my own car, a 1960 Rambler American to zip around our property with. Had a really long private driveway and a big dirt lot that my Uncles had as a gravel bank. Dad paid $25 for that car.

My uncles 61 light green 61 Galaxie. He even let me pull a holeshot.

 

i don't remember for sure, but it was either the minneapolis moline or the '48 3/4 ton dodge pickup (flathead 6; granny low 4-sp).

don't have any idea what year the M-M was but it had to be hand cranked.

 

Old Ford Econoline panel van. 6 cylinder and 3 on the tree. Out on the farm lanes picking produce. Then my 55 Chevy 265 and 3 on the tree. Racing up and down my driveway.

 

At first glance I thought the title to this thread read, "what did you learn at a drive in". Kinda personal question.

 

An old chase behind a nice pacer named Angel. First car I drove was a '32 Essex coupe with a rumble seat.

 

embarrasing to actually say...... A little FIAT SPYDER, 5 speed... pretty gay.

A go-kart, mini bike, tractor, skid loader, 2 ton 60's grain truck, and a 70's vega wagon. In that order.

First car I rolled. A 72 ford f100 with a 460. 15 yrs old. Oops... Not cool.
