Model A Roadster Poll: WELD-IN DOORS?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Slimegreeeeeen, Mar 5, 2012.

  1. I've got a 29 roadster coming together. It's all metal. I'm thinking of welding in the doors with no overlap and ditching the exposed hinges for a cleaner overall aesthetic and having the interior seatback wrap around into the interior door panels without a break. Opinions?

DO IT! It's cleaner and hopping in and out of it will not be tough.

DON'T DO IT You'll regret it. Too much hassle to hop in and out of.

  2. Evidently, I've forgotten how to set up a poll.

I believe it will hurt your resale value. I wouldn't to it.

  4. Casny vote a bigass "NO". I'm going to say that counts as three "NO" votes.

If you really are considering doing this, I'll bet you could be persuaded to trade that steel body even-up for a solid 'glass body with non-opening doors sanded smooth!

  6. Don't do it. If that's the look you want build a T-bucket. Flush fit the doors but don't weld em shut!!!

When I bought mine they were welded up. First thing I did was cut em open.

When the doors were welded closed in the past, they were also cut down, usually in a 'check' pattern, emulating a sports car. The cutdown made it easier to step in.

  16. I don't think you need another opinion....but what the heck..

    Don't do it!

My t-bucket had no doors and it was the one thing I wish was different. I'm just a hair over 6 feet tall and it still sucked stepping over the side. When I strained my back at work, I couldn't even get into the dang thing for a couple weeks.

  17. Put fairings over the hinges like a lakster and leave the door functional.

Doors welded shut for anything but a real race car looks like you cut corners.

I like doors. If your going to do it make it a shorty roadster and move the quarters ahead and weld them to the cowl. Thats the only way I thing it will look good without doors. A 29 roadster is such a cool car it would be a shame to weld the doors shut.

If there is no functional reason to weld them shut, then don't. If it was a way channeled fenderless car that came to me with crap doors and no hinges I'd probably think about it for ten minutes or so, but that's it.

Oooooo..I dont think I'd do that to a roadster

besides you'd have to stay young, to get in and out of it all the time..too late

If you mean cleaner, as in more modern looking, then NO.

If this is just part of the plan to do a real hard core early 50s build, with all the other quirks those had in the Little Books...then YES. Nobody has the stones to build one of those these days. It needs to be the whole deal, not just smoothed doors.

Ya know, when I think about it, my favorite car ever the NieKamp '29 had it's right door filled. So did several other lakes and drag roadsters. What context are you building this in? I can also think of one from the early sixties that made the rounds of the mags that was a channeled car that was filled too. Like I said earlier, I think that and condition of the doors would be a deciding factor.

Just weld up the driver's side and leave the passenger door operational like Bill Niecamp did on the first Oakland roadster show winner.
