    damn those look great!!

  7. With the seat back in I started messing with the interior seeing how my 6'5" frame would fit. I had moved the seat bottom back about 3" and I reclined the seat back rest to nearly the back of the cockpit. Normally the top will fold back behind the seat...this is out of the question. I will probably end up putting a top on it that will simply pop off. Kind of a pain in the ass, but it's not like I'm going to be taking it off/on every other day.

I mocked the top on it, as I want a top on it for the drive to Bonneville, and with my new upholster buddy I am excited to get on it! I screwed around with it for a couple hours, moving it up and down finally resting it here. The windshield is chopped 2", and the top is roughly dropped 2" as well. I am simply going to re-drill the holes in the irons to lower em.

Here is the car I LOVE the top on! Actually I love the whole car :D

And here's my masking take mock-up. I can sit in it comfortably and see out the back window!!

Chris, here are a couple of roadsters running around the streets of LA. The one with the top is my favorite. It is chopped more than yours and laid back a bunch. Yours is coming along great. I enjoy your ramblings for a young man.. you have good taste in cars.

  11. Pewsplace, thanks! I love both of those roadsters too. I do ramble on quite a bit sometimes...

    It's looking great!

On the top mock up, do you have it going so far back for visibility rather than right to the door like it's supposed to? Are you going to make side curtains too, or are you going to fill those holes?

The one in HR Deluxe is kick ass. Would that be about '49-50? I like the curve in the top corner in the door opening too. Would you be interested in seeing what that looks like in tape?

This is a drawing I did recently for a top view. Don't know if this is the look you are going for. Really don't mean this as a plug. Love where your roadster is going.

  14. I've seen some that the top stretches to the door and others that stop short. I kinda like it set back...more room to have your arm out the window!!! I also like the rounded corners, I am gonna pick some more tape up tonight and mess with it...but photoshoppers give it a go if you want :)

  15. Well, tonight was somewhat of a disappointment. Last night I lit the thing off just to hear it. I noticed it blew some water out the passanger side header. I have strait water in the car, no antifreeze. Condensation? Seemed like too much water but I locked up and went to bed. This morning it was bugging me so before work I fired it again. Same thing, blew about a cup of water out the passenger side header but ran fine. Called my Dad and he said he would swing by after work. We pulled the plugs and I cranked it over...Blew water out the number 2 hole. So, drained the water and pulled the head.

    Nice big crack.

This head did have a crack in it. It went up the center of the water outlet holes and I figured it would not hurt anything. I rationed that repairing may do more damage then help. But this other crack is new. I had the heads machined and it was not there. It starts at the top water outlet and works it way right into the cylinder. The good news is we are nearly certain it did not bend the rod or do any other damage. I drained the oil out and will start fresh.

Now, I am into old original stuff as anyone, but this is the second set of second hand heads that have failed me. So I am going new. I would LOVE to run a set of Navarros or Evans...but I just don't have the cash. My Dad has a set of new int he box Edelbrock script heads that he made me a great deal on. My first choice? No, but practible? Yes. So I am gonna run those and life goes one.

I dunno what happened to the Edmunds head. They were torqued in the right sequence, first at 30 then at 50. Ran fine for 10 minutes and never got hot. Maybe a bad casting? Maybe the other crack had something to do with it? It may be fixable, but I am going to keep an eye out for a good single head.

This is what it blew out tonight (plugs were out)

I'd rather be practical and goin down the road than cool and sittin beside it!

  18. Oooof. That sucks dude.

  19. Heartbreaking man. Sorry to hear. I was actually talking to a old flathead guy today and he said to forget all the old heads for this exact reason....it can be a crap shoot.

also it almost looks like another crack to the right side of the picture. I'll keep an eye out for a single for ya.

  20. Exactly. I am driving this son of a bitch to Bonneville this year. What a choke it would be to get half way there in the middle of no were and have something happen?

I got the other head off, both gasket surfaces cleaned and all bottom 10 studs out. I have to run longer studs for the other heads but need some sealant to put on the threads. Should be back in business soon

I gotta give my Dad thanks, he is one the smartest guys I know and always helps me find solutions to my problems. He always seems to know what to do, and how to fix it. He dropped everything tonight to come help me figure this out, and offered up heads and gaskets to help me get it back together. He lurks on here and I know he'll read this...so thanks dad, your the best!!!

Here's how she looks with the new heads. Not TOOOOO bad...

  21. It is, that was a crack that I knew was there from the beginning. It jumps between the water ports. It would not really hurt anything, the gasket is below it. The crack that screwed me is the one leading into the combustion chamber.

  22. Gotcha, I thought it did both at the same time and the crack you were talking about was in the screw in part for the sender. But now I realize it was the other set. 102 degree fever screwing with me.

Hey, now is the time to add "brand new vintage Edmund (or insert other preferred brand) heads still in their box" to your wedding gift list.

You know you want to. :)

like you said, better to find it now. it just amazes me that we can still even get NEW stuff for 70 year old engines. i think those new heads are a christmas miracle in march.

You've got about 5 months to find the rest of the bugs in this thing ...that was a big one. It's good it happened now. I've got my fingers crossed for you on that bottom row of studs. I've never had them all come out easy. There is always one or two that just plain suck to remove.

  27. I already got em out. I bought all new studs. They were all long when I had the Sharp heads, then I had to change the bottom to shorter with the Edmunds heads. Now with the Edelbrock heads it's back to the long ones.

One step forward, one step back....lots of time left. Sorry to hear.. So what do you do with the old heads? Garage Art, or can you still find someone else to "run" them?

Nice build man! 33/34 roadsters are such a beauty all their own. Best of luck in getting it ready for your wedding. I’m sure it will look awesome (all your cars do). At my wedding I drove my Dads 24 Touring and I had everyone that had old cars bring them so it was like a wedding in the middle of a car show. I got a lot of compliments from people about it. PM me if you want some pictures for ideas.
