i really don't like chrome much! at all. now i really like polished aluminum and stainless. but thats just me! one goal i have for my A roadster pickup is to not have any chrome! hummmmmmmmmmmmmm
uh...I have a custom, and chrome is GOOD! On a hot rod it's not as necessary IMO to look good, but you need it for a custom. Bill
The only chrome I really like on cars is the bumpers and some molding. As far as the engine goes, I like polished aluminum more. Ya know what they say, "Chrome wont get ya home."
My dad is building a 34 Dodge for a guy ,and he wanted to chrome the running boards, dash, continental kit and the whole grille. I think it will be cool not many people in the 50's could afford alot chrome. Kennedy ohh yeah we talked the guy out of all that chrome on the Dodge
The only chrome I really like on cars is the bumpers and some molding. I agree! As for engines though, I always prefer to see old, tarnished up untouched aluminum rather than polished. Somehow I dont think theres going to be one thing chromed or polished on my 'A when its done (hey rust and primer are colors...) -Dean
As long as it has black primmer and red wheels then who really cares. I am in the process of restoring a 1968 ford fairlane to make a nice rat rod into. It will be old school to the bone! Thats all that matters! I love old skool rods! Taylor
I dont have any chrome on the front of my 49 ford and I always wonder how well people can see it when driving at night and I am parked along the road (usually broke down) it is a scary thought. I never was one to spend money on chrome but we did paint the wheels on my dolly and trash can with some chrome spray paint Bling Bling
Ya know, Ryan really needs to think about adding a smilie eating popcorn...oh and one giving the finger too!
Before there was commercial chrome plating there was copper, nickle, silver and gold plating. I've heard that since it's got fewer steps, gold plating is cheaper to do than copper/nickle/chrome triple plating. Breck hairspray cans usta all be 24k gold plated and just got tossed in the trash when empty! Being able to smelt, cast and polish aluminum is one of the most recent discoveries of techology, like within the past two centuries I think. It's use parallels the invention of the automobile and for that reason is probably a most logical and natural material to use in a car. I like chrome on Customs, as long as it's different from the chrome the factory put on it. On hotrods? If it don't go, Chrome it! A hotrod should only have chrome if it's already the fastest car in the whole valley and the owner still has a little spending cash left over from paying for go-fast stuff and no girl to waste it on...
Anything shiny on my build is stainless. There will be no "bright work" on the body and I am staying away from shiny front end stuff (perches, shackles, etc.) even though I can get it in stainless. Just mostly engine stuff ie. velocity stacks, generator cover, oil fill tube and cap, etc. I didn't polish my Sharp intake either. I am not too much of a fan of the bling, bling look, just suttle enhancements. By the way I never had much luck with chrome plating. Prolly the guys who I bought the stuff from, but it doesn't seem to hold its look and I can ALWAYS find imperfections. IMHO Mike
I'd much rather see a neat, painted or powder-coated part with beautiful welds and finish than a chrome-plated piece with ground welds, gouges and booger-lookin' welds. Ain't it about the workmanship after all ? What would you admire....a set of Kelsey-Hayes wires all restored with smooth, shiny paint or a set of billet monstrosities that look like Wal*Mart just had a sale ?
Guess all you chrome haters really dug on the whole 80's paint jobs w/ the chrome grills and bumpers paintedthe same color as the rest of the car? These were the billet turds. Chrome is purty.
i'm just the opposite; i like chrome but don't much care for polished aluminum or stainless. not many things look better than dark paint offset by some (not a lot!) chrome. engines that have no color, i.e., just polished or plated stuff showing look really boring to me. you need to be predominately color with just enough shiny to set it off...
This post cracks me up.........if guys had the cash in the day they would chrome plate everything, chrome is king, I guess I should s**** my chrome front end and replace the stock perches with stainless ones with some nice open powder coated shocks.......wtf I thought you guys were into early hot rods not new wave ****.
Chrome rules! Look at the Beatnic Bandit... Roth chromed the entire engine, the front end, everything. And remember, "Chrome makes it run better."
Polished stainless is a replacement for chrome, but not quite as good looking. They're close, but there is a difference - provided you got good chrome. On the car in the pic below, one set of 4-bars is stainless, the other set is chrome.
send all you cast away chrome parts to me, especially 40 ford backing plates, and umm...f1 shock mounts....I'll make sure they get ...ah, destroyed.
I like old, scratched, dull, rusty, pitted chrome with some character. Throw on a little road grime and some bug guts, too. New **** is for show cars... JOE
