Here is my problem. I have a 8BA in my '39 with merc crank over bored too 3 3/8 edmund heads eldrabrock intake with 2 97's and a mallory YC duel point. It was running fine then all of asuden it idled fine but poped and back fired real bad and rapped out the exhaust when under load. I had problems with the points before so I got new points and same thing. so I got new wires and while instaling them I seen the ballast resistor was bad witch I think was the problem so I replaced it, but now it wont start at all. It is kinda firing on a few cylinder but not enough to start. I put modern style wires on it so does the YC need to have solid cores on it the way they go in the spikes in the cap? If it is still poping after could it be a bent valve? Thanks.
Which version of the Mallory do you have ??? How many lobes on the distributor cam. Pretty hard to set up a four lobe with a feeler gauge and get the sync correct...... We do them on a machine and even then they can be a bit touchy. Be glad to help if ya cant get it , ship er to me.
It is a eight lobe It atleast started before the plug wires, do you have to use solid core wires with them? would a condennser make it it not start? BUBBA, I realy want to get one of your SBC dizzy convertions and forget about the dual point mallory. How much do one of those run? Do you have them done or do I need to get a core? Thanks in advance ,David.
The chevrolet conversion is $180 these days and comes complete with heavy duty contacts, condensor, new delco cap and rotor with ballast resistor ready to run . No core is needed.... Just call the shop and tell the girl you want a flathead, chevrolet conversion.... 1-888-809-3835 toll free
Stuck maybe but Don't know how it could get bent. I understand the carb pop or "sneeze" can blow out the power valve above the base of the carb and it screws up in a big way.
Trad27, After all the praises I've read here, I'd like to get a Bubba conversion, too, but for less than $100 you can get a Pertronix insert for that Mallory. It's available in either 6V or 12V versions. I did it and haven't looked back. I keep the old point plate in the trunk in case the Pertronix fails, and if it fails I'll probably give Bubba a call.
