My uncle just recently p***ed away from the f**king cancer. He built some amazing racing motors in his days. He left an unfinished project in my Aunt's garage and she asked me to help ID it. I thought I'd recruit help from my fellow HAMBers. Any ideas on what this motor could be?? Thanks guys.
is that the 260 something ford made in the 80's for maybe two years? what gets me is the 4 barrel intake. but then again ford had some truck motors that where odd.
its a big mopar, look on the side of the block and it will have the displacment year of manufacture and if its an Hp that will also be cast there. It looks like an internally balance motor judging by the balancer.
the ones that stated mopar would be correct. It is a 440 not sure of the year but the pad at the top on the drivers side just above the water pump on the front will tell you what you need to know.
It is definitely a Mopar Big Block....Looks to me like it is either a 400 or 440...most likely a 400.
Hard to tell by looking, the 400 as well as the later 383 were both low deck motors. the 440 and the early 383 were tall deck motors. I can only tell the difference by setting them side by side.
Small block Ford's of any size never had a canted distributor, center exhaust ports Siamesed, or a dry manifold - so No. And the odd ball one was 1980-82 and was 255cu in
Because it has a tag on the valve cover that looks like it has a bar code...I would say it is a later model..possibly late 70's early 80's..that would rule out it being a 383...that's why I am betting it is a 400.
X2 on the 400. The block looks too short for a 440 and the 400 was what they were making in the seventies. Still a good motor with a lot of hop up potential but not real popular right now except with Mopar freaks.
find a number on it somewhere and google it. that works better with Chevrolets, but I did ID an old mopar big block once that way.
400s went in motorhomes too - if it is one the block is desireable because of its large bore (same stroke as 383) mopar guys use this block to build up stroker motors and the short deck makes for pistons with less comprssion height (lighter) and they are an easier fit in A bodys (dusters, etc) dont let it go to s****, someone can use it!
Yup. No doubt about it. mid-late '70s, cast crank 440. It IS NOT a 400, has the cast in pad adjacent to the distributor.
Its a 440 engine with a cast crank. See the machined "pad" where the plug wires are drooping over? That tells you it's a 413/426/440 "rb" block. The harmonic balancer is the one used on cast cranks and the 440 is the only rb block that had a cast crank in the later versions.
clean that flat pad on top of the engine next to the distributor, that will tell you exactly what you have.
If I remember correctly the 440 RB series lasted until 1978 in regular vehicles. Same block as the 413, 426 wedge. Your casting numbers on any MOPAR part will have close to the same amount of digits GM used on their Chevrolet casts. The 400 shared the 383 and 361 block (B series). I like how easy you can identify MOPAR's blocks seeing what year and what shift it was cast on as well apart from the vasting number itself. Hang on to it, I wish I had a MOPAR BB, I already have a 273 LA in the garage along with other mills I won't be selling. Anyone remember the Plymouth Warlock? Mopar's 'sister' performance truck. 440 RB planted in that beast, still being beat out by the Little Red Express w/ the 360ci for the fastest production vehicle in 1978.
I should add, I have literature on the Mopar BB engines as well, post your casting ID numbers and I can see whats what next time I am on to help if you like. Otherwise just roam the info from google.
