You may recall I did a Thread sometime back covering my 1st attempt at making a pattern and casting up a timing cover for 346 Cadillac flathead engine as there is not much out there accessory wise for these monsters. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=311796 Well I decided I wanted some finned aluminum valley plates to give my project a bit more of the traditional hot rod look. So this is what I ended up with. Just to let the flathead Cadillac engines guys know if they are searching for parts or info there is a new site http://www.flatcaddy.com/ which may be worth a look. My next casting project will be a pair of finned aluminum engine mount covers, these covers will stock as well as hot rods running the original mounts. Any body who has one of these engies will know how ugly the engine mounts look.
Wow Russ! They look great! Are you doing covers for both sides of the mount, or a 'box' type that will cover the whole thing?
My plan is to cover the metal arm off the side of the engine and most of the rubber cushion if possible but the aim is to fit stock and most hot rods running stock style mounts. They got to look better than the factory finish.
Good job Russ. I was wondering what you have been up to lately. I should have known it would be something cool like this.
Russ, while you are at it... How about a dipstick cover, an oil pan, oh never mind! That's my Xmas wish list!
I think it would be a good idea to install a p.c.v. in the valley cover. All you need is a vacuum source, and the engine runs cleaner because of crankcase vacuum instead of pressure. I also built a cover for my mounts using Caddy emblems on the plate.
Yes, the plates have been cast with the view to using a PCV if required. The center circle area has enough depth to cope with drilling or machining a PCV point of choice without disturbing the fins. Also, on the underside I have provided a substantial lip all the way around so a sludge tray could be attached (on one or both) and a suitable filling installed to help prevent oil fumes wofting thru.
I, now have a thread which provides information that shows the way I setup my PCV system to work with these valley plates. Feel free to take a look and comment. The thread link is; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=9211006#post9211006
