Hey guys, i posted a question about a 454 i have a line on but i got the facts wrong,.. The motor is 7.4 in a 1988 chevy c30 mason dump truck,.(but is still the older body style.) the wierd thing is that it has tubular headers (with the huge air hoses) But its not computer controlled whatsoever,. it has a standard Q-jet carb and even a Vacuum advance HEI dizzy, seems odd to me.. Anyone know what the deal would be with this motor? like Horsepower rating or if it is or isnt a tall deck Big block? Would this motor with the factory headers still have the ****py peanut port heads>? Thanks again for your help! Jason
all the info still applies, get the numbers off the block and get an ID on it the $700.00 was it? for a used short block and recent rebuilt truck transmission isn't a bad deal but it's not a super deal either. http://www.moonlightspeedshop.com/bbccastnum.htm http://www.mortec.com/bbc.htm http://www.4chevy.com/casting_numbers.htm http://simonrage.com/camaro/castnum.htm#BBCB
I've got a 454 from an '89 Chevy SS pickup truck. It had TBI but now has a quadrajet. Not a ton of horsepower (probably less than 300) but has more than enough torque to get the tires spinning in low gear at 20-30 mph. There ain't nothing like a big block!
more than likely it is a tall deck.put it in anyway no one will know.they look good (better than the small block) and they run.as for tire burning at 20 or 30 m.p.h.,learn to ease it to it so it won't do that or else some punk in a honda will give you a holeshot and you'll never live it down
Good point!, I will be running 14" pinner whites too, the car is a 64 belair 4 door sedan i will be building custom/bellflower style, it will be cool to see the big ol boat grab a hard 2nd gear with the shiftkit and lurch sideways, hahaha
A C30 is a one ton truck, which is a '"light" truck...so it should be the short deck 454, NOT the tall deck 427 medium duty truck engine. I seem to recall that 88 was about the last year for non-computer control in trucks. I have a pair of those tubular manifolds laying around here somewhere, nothing special, apparently they work a little better and don't crack as easy as the iron ones. I'd be surprised if it did not have peanut port heads. Net horsepower should be in the low 200s, I'd guess. Put a mild cam in it, perhaps some real headers (to fit your car), and expect maybe 350 crank hp, and that's without revving it very high. ***uming it's not worn out, which is pretty likely for a 17 year old truck engine!
Actully the Truck/motor has 85k on the odometer, (it got punched in the face and has a bent frame.) it fired up with a tap of the key today with no smoke,no rattles, etc etc, just shot fresh ****** fluid everywhere becuase it comes with a new th400 Non-peanut heads with be the icing on the cake! but i thought all trucks came with those.. seems like im going to have to run block hugger headers though,.since i dont know anyone who makes big block non 348-409 headers for a 58-64 x frame. im pretty excited!, my first Big block.
not sure if you understood me correctly, I am guessing that it does have peanut ports. Not a problem for a mild street motor. I recently bought a pair of ****** headers for my 61 for a big block on ebay. They're huge, though, over 2" primaries, so they wouldn't work too well with that engine you're thinking of buying. Not sure, but there might be some other smaller ones available, look up Hedman and see if they have some.
I'm running a late 80's 454 in a 4x4 ton truck with peanut port heads. They are the ****, if you want to make big HP, but really do the trick for torque. it's a std bore 454 with dished pistons and peanut port heads, a performer cam and manifold and a Jet Q-Jet carb flowing out a set of headers into dual 2.25 pipes to a flowmaster dual inlet and single 3" outlet. Dynosim tells me I'm good for about 325hp at 4000 rpm, and 480 lbs/ft at 2500 rpm. It's no screamer but it will push a mountain of snow in front of my 9' plow with little trouble. That motor in a light car would make for fun stop light to stop light action. Oh, and I get 7-8 mpg with that monster. Keep that in mind if your planning any long trips.
yessir, that'd be a low compression, peanut headed 454. fair torque, NO horsepower from factory. it will respond enough to a cam,intake/carb,header swap to make a good driver but will absolutely KILL you in gas mileage. i've got a 496 & a 6spd in my 02 dually & can't get more than 12mpg...mel
hahah,,.. Gas mileage.... ya i figured i would only be able to drive the 60mile each way to work maybe once a week in this thing 325hp sounds good enough for me with the typical cam, etc.. as long as i can have a nice amount of torque, and is a lot better platform to start with then a 283!
I managed to get 13-14 on the highway with an oval port 454 in my 66 Suburban, with 3.07 gears, mild cam, headers, and a qjet on an early high rise stock iron intake. Having fun with the hp cuts mileage drastically, though.
Just my 2 cents but you would be better off finding a pre 72 396/402. Even the basic 325 Hp Qjet version will haul serious *** and still runs on regular gas. I get 15-16 mpg (very seldom since I cant keep my foot out of it) in a 4200# 68 Impala ragtop. The 396/325 is an easy score in the Caprice and some Impalas.
hmmm...I get pretty ****py mileage in my 59 pickup with a 325hp 396 with a lumpy hydraulic cam...although it does seem to have almost as much power as the 454 I mentioned above. Been a while since I've seen a 396/402 for sale cheap.
I've only had about a half dozen 454s and they all got about ten miles to the gallon didn't matter if it was stock or built, drove easy or run hard, towing or coasting down hill.
A good friend of mine has a 62 impala with a mild 454, 4 speed, and 336 diff. He's got 235 70 15's on the rear. That 30 mph 'burnout' your talking about should be NO problem witha relatively skinny tire. I've been in the car when he's done it, many time's just for laugh's. we'd be rolling about 25 mph or so, and all he has to do is lean on the 'go' pedal and this thing light's up and will actually smoke the tire's.. As for the motor your talking about, i would agree, low horse, peanut head. but it's still a 454, and will take to some upgrade's like the rest. Granted, your head's are the biggest problem, but if your not racing it you'll probably have more than enough power to have fun, and be reliable. Old Kid, you got me beat and you have the bigger mill!!! I have an '02 2500HD with the 366-auto-4:10 and only get 10 to 11mpg at best!
