If you were in a U-pullit junk yard looking for a 8" ford with posi in it which cars would be most likely to have the posi unit?
Also is there a way to tell if they are posi without taking them apart,is there tags on them or something, and if so where are they located?
Is there info telling what ratio they are?
Can any ratio R&P be used with the carrier?
    Thanks

The metal tag will have the ratio like 3 00. If it has trac lock it will be 3 L 00. MII best bet but will be four lug axle. Carrier fits all ratios.

Ditto on what Phil said, Look for the L. What width are you looking for?? Mustangs with V8's, Ford Rangers with 4.0L engines, and explorers are good places to search!

I'd look for a time machine first...but they used the 8" in Falcons, mavericks, Granadas, Mustang II, Mustang, Fairlane, and other small-mid size cars from the early 60s to late 70s. Trac loc is not very common in the 8", you'll be looking a while most likely.

Not worried about width--have 8" now from 67 mustang (I think) just want carrier with trac lock---didn't realize they were that scarce.
Does the ones with 4 bolt axle have same spline as my 5 bolt axle?

My "guess" is yes, ford makes/made a 28 spline rear axle and 31 spline rear. Typically 31 splines have a 3.25" diameter tubing and are in the trucks and explorers. The 28 splines came with a 3" diameter housing.

IGNORE EVERYTHING I have said.......my mind automatically went to 8.8's!

Yes 4 lug and 5 lug 8 inch axles are all 28 spline.

V-6 Pinto Cruizing wagons had 8 inch traction locks and most V-8 Mustang II's.

Both are very scarce in junk yards.

    Where is the tag located?

  9. Under one of the nuts that hold the pumpkin to the housing. If your going junk yard crawling take along a spray can of brake or carb cleaner, some rags or paper towels, and a tooth brush or red 3M abrasive pad. Rear ends are almost always gobbed up with a mix of dirt and oil. A screw driver can be useful when the crud is really caked on.

And if there is no tag on the rear end, is there anyway to still tell if it's a posi? I got one from a guy out of a MII that is supposedly a 4-lug posi, but there is no tag on it.

Look on the drivers door tag. Under trans you will see a number (open differental) or a letter (traction lock). Beats finding snakes or jacking a car.

If you can easily turn one axle while holding the other axle still, then it's not.
